The audio version works well, as the story is 'told' to us, as it is to the listener within the book. It was easy enough to follow both the plot and who is speaking. I didn't listen with my son as we haven't read the first together, but I think he would enjoy the adventure in a year or two. The first book in the series follows the adventures of Podkin, his sister Paz and their baby brother Pook.

Again, my favourite element of the book is the bard, who is on his own journey with an apprentice-to-be, Rue. He looks after Rue in a slightly curmudgeonly manner but ultimately shows the love he was once shown - a thoughtful ending wraps up his story (for now) very poignantly. Having survived the battle against Scramashank and chopping off one of his legs, Podkin, Paz and Pook along with Crom and the others hole up in Dark Hollow, a warren hidden within Grimheart forest. Hidden away from immediate danger Podkin starts to feel unappreciated and useless, consequently, he decides to explore their new warren. During this exploration Podkin happens upon the Gift of Dark Hollow and sets into motion a course of events that may just help the rabbits defeat the Gorm.

This book introduces several new characters, most notably Zarza, a bonedancer, Yarrow the bard and Vetch, who is a mystery but there are hints of his possible involvement in book 3. Like with book 1 all the characters are nicely fleshed-out and the relationships between the rabbits is heart-warming at times. Podkin, Paz and Pook have survived - just - and are now holed up in Grimheart forest, avoiding the Gorm at all costs. Podkin, however, is feeling less than appreciated and goes for a wander in his new surroundings, where he stumbles upon a new Gift. This leads him to overhear a conversation about where another has been hidden, a Gift that can help them end the Gorm forever.Warning: this review may contain some spoilers for The Legend of Podkin One-Ear, the first book in the series. The story is about Podkin, the son of a tribal chief, who, with his older sister and young brother, flees from his castle as the bad Goroms invade. The Goroms kill his father and imprison his people, like they do with every rabbit borrow they invade. There are no people in this story, only rabbits who behave very humanly. Podkin, who has two ears at the beginning of the story, changes from a lazy young rabbit who cannot even be disturbed to want to learn to read and write into a brave warrior who takes a stand for his family.

The Legend of Podkin One-Ear’ won the Blue Peter Book Award 2017, the Prix Sorcieres 2019, was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2018 and nominated for the Carnegie Award 2018. It has also been optioned for television. Illustration by David Wyatt The Gift of Dark Hollow Uki’s adventures are from over when you read the last word of the book and readers are left desperate for more and with more questions than answers. I hope that this is the first in what will be another trilogy. Now we know there’s more to the bard part of the story, it’s safe to say these little interludes have just become much more interesting. It’s a cute little side story that compliments and elevates an already strong story in its own right. Die bisweilen sehr ernste bis düstere Stimmung sollte junge Leser auch ein wenig zum Nachdenken anregen. Denn es ist wie im realen Leben nicht immer eitel Sonnenschein und die beiden älteren Hasenkinder sind deutlich gereift. Obwohl die Geschichte zum einen sehr viele Anregungspunkte zum Thema: Wer bin ich? und Was will ich? bietet, ist es trotzdem sehr spannend und abenteuerlich. As with the first book, the relationships between Podkin and Paz, and Podkin and Crom, show real heart, while new characters such as Zarza and Vetch offer possible hints of what is to come in book 3.I really like that there are strong messages on bullying, being different and friendship that are told through the outcasts. All of the rabbits have suffered bullying in some form. Exiled for their differences, it is their differences that bind these three warriors together and as the adventure becomes more fraught with dangers so the their friendship grows in strength. Het verhaal gaat over Podkin, de zoon van een stamhoofd, die met zijn oudere zus en jonge broertje vlucht uit zijn burcht als de slechte Goroms binnenvallen De Goroms doden zijn vader en nemen alle anderen gevangen. En dat doen ze bij alle burchten die ze binnenvallen. Er komen geen mensen voor in dit verhaal, alleen konijnen die zich wel erg menselijk gedragen. Podkin, die aan het begin van het verhaal nog twee oren heeft, verandert van een lui jong konijn dat nog te beroerd is om te willen leren lezen en schrijven, in een dappere strijder die het opneemt voor zijn familie. Ovo, ipak, nije jedna od tih priča. Ovo je priča o malenom zečiću koji tek treba postati legendom. Riječima barda iz čijih je usta priča izašla, ova je priča različita. Zato što je istinita. His mother offers some excellent advice that I’d love to share with all the children that I teach; Podkin Podkin află de la Polygon, un fugar de la Crucea Mărului, de un alt Dar magic al Zeiței, Ciocanul sacru Izbici.
