About this deal

If you want to brighten up a room by painting it a colour, but don’t want your radiator to stand out like a sore thumb, you can paint it to match your colour-scheme. Preparation Before Painting Your Radiator You can use a standard paint brush, or it might be worth investing in an angled radiator brush to help you get into awkward gaps. What Paint to use for Your Radiator Top Coat? It is usually a good idea to apply at least two top coats so allow the first coat to dry (preferably for at least twenty four hours) and then apply another coat If your radiator looks almost beyond saving, if the stains on it are themselves heavily stained and if it would look much more at home in a skip than in your home, you need Zinsser 123 Bulls Eye. Available in 13 subtle colours, your first – and possibly only – coat should be touch-dry within a couple of hours. If you judge a second coat necessary, leave at least three to four hours to ensure ideal conditions.

Radiators can be susceptible to corrosion from external influences especially in kitchens, bathrooms and toilets. Mopping floors in these environments can mean moisture rises and tends to always affect radiators, especially along the bottom edges. Painting your radiators is a great way to protect it and give it a facelift. With the right tools, this is a pretty easy job you can do in an afternoon. Make sure that the paint is completely dry before you turn the radiator on again – it is a good idea to again, leave it for at least a day or so.Pay special attention to any rust spots, ensuring you remove any rust and leave a smooth surface otherwise it will always look rough. Dust the radiator clean again after sanding and then vacuum if possible. Additionally wipe it over with a damp cloth to remove any fine dust particles but remember to dry it off with a cloth afterwards. The surface of a radiator requires two coats of paint. However, you should let the first coat of paint dry off completely before you continue painting your radiator. Apply a metal primer or a specialist radiator primer first before adding your new paint finish. It’s so important to add the right primer, particularly over any bare or rusty spots, to ensure a solid base for the paint to cling to.

If you have applied an under coat or primer coat make sure that this is completely dry before you add your top coat finish. With the primer or undercoat dry, wipe your radiator over. Important: Depending on how old it is, the paint on your radiator could include lead, which can be harmful, particularly to children and pregnant women. If you’re unsure it’s important to get advice from a professional who will be able to advise on the best course of action. Preparation: Ensure surface is clean, dry, and free from contamination. Bare metal surfaces should be primed with a suitable metal primer. Previously painted surfaces (or the original factory finish) should be abraded and degreased prior to paint application. Not only do rusty radiators look bad, they can also cause serious problems. Over time, the radiator will start to develop ‘pinhole’ leaks. Such leaks start off small and can be very difficult to accurately locate. You may not even notice them at first, but given enough time, the rusted area can disintegrate completely and cause a flood. How to prevent rusty radiatorsIdeally it is much easier to paint your radiator before it goes on the wall, or to remove it and paint it. You can see our article on removing a radiator for help with this.

Finally, to rinse off the cleaner successfully, use a hose with a jet setting or a power washer, then leave to dry overnight. If the rust on a radiator is superficial, it may be possible to remove it by sanding it down and repainting it. To apply the coat of primer you may have to invest in an angled radiator brush if you have an unusually shaped radiator. If you’ve decided to use a metal primer spray, make sure you have the surrounding surfaces protected as this could get very messy. If this sounds too fiddly for you and you are worried you might mess it up, speak to a local painter and decorator who can help.
