About this deal

During Roger and Brianna's trip to Savannah, they stopped briefly in Charles Town, South Carolina. The visit served a dual purpose. First, they returned Germaine to his parents, Fergus and Marsali. He lived on the Ridge while they all recovered from Henri-Christian's death. Fergus and Marsali run a successful printing business, working solidly on the side of the Americans. Fergus's connections make him the perfect person to help Roger and Bree acquire rifles for Jamie's militia. The descriptions of everything involved in this undertaking were, at times, scary and hilarious. There were some intense moments when Loyalists made their unhappiness with Fergus and his views plain. The danger motivates Fergus and family to relocate. Fergus also has another encounter with someone claiming to know the truth of his birth. Lydia, a beautiful young woman, is abandoned by her drunken husband being forced to struggle to raise her only child, Charlie. When she is in the verge of collapse, Jean, Charlie's doctor, enters their life like a miracle. She provides Charlie with a getaway in her huge garden and she lets him tend to the bees, a chore Charlie takes with a lot of enthusiasm. And she gives Lydia a reason to live again. An unusual tale of love and loss told through three different voices: a ten year old child, his mother and their doctor, Jean Markham, set in a little British village in the fifties. I have pretty specific needs when it comes to period pieces; while I certainly have exceptions, generally speaking, I don’t go out of my way to read period sagas of war or famine or heartache. I want Jane Austen. I want some bumps and misunderstandings that end in the bad guys getting what they deserve, and the good guys coming out on top.

Authors have no involvement in adaptations. Hollywood thinks we are the least important piece of the puzzle, and by and large authors have zero control over a film. You give a baby up for adoption, you hope it goes to a good family and sometimes you’re disappointed. Jean is the town doctor. Single. A pretty big deal, for 1950s Scotland. She’s rational and a little distant, and she spends most of what little free time she has between her best friend Jim, and her bees. A fight on the schoolyard brings Charlie Weekes into her clinic; Charlie is quiet and precocious, and drawn to a honeycomb Jean keeps in her office. The two of them bond over her bees in their reserved, introverted fashions. It’s in fact a little unfair to single out the gays in this case. Everyone in this film seems pretty unhappy, be it the men traumatized by war, the women crushed by sexist expectations, or the people of color being marginalized. On the one hand, it’s nice to see the film take a wider look at the period’s faults, but on the other it makes for a pretty dreary watch, one that doesn’t sit well in the current landscape of queer cinema. An Impure Distillation

The character who stood out most to me is Charlie. He is perhaps the best written boy of that age I have ever encountered in fiction. He sees everything and Shaw has captured precisely the level of understanding a 11 year old boy can bring to life, he’s not old beyond his years and he’s certainly not like the witty, fast-talking, sarcastic children we see on TV shows. He’s a boy, interested in his toy sailboat and exploring the woods and interested in sports, maybe a little less so than other boys. He’s grappling with the very beginnings of feelings for girls, not understanding why he wants to make an impression or is seeking attention or feels jealous of an older boy.
