About this deal

Each of the books has a central mystery at its core that Enola has to solve. Typically, these are focused on women and their problems in the era. For example — women being forced to wear corsets, thrown into arranged marriages, being robbed etc. (the rest of the review is available at my blog or any of the links below) Morey, Anne; Nelson, Claudia (2012). "The Secret Sharer: The Child in Neo-Victorian Fiction". Neo-Victorian Studies. 5 (1): 1–13.

As is typical, coded messages play a central role. Toward the end, there’s a coded message that isn’t decrypted for the reader immediately. Enola as the narrator asks the reader to wait until she reveals the message, even though certainly we could figure out the coded message. I wonder how many young readers who hadn’t before bothered to play with the encryptions took the time to figure that one out? It’s a fun way to draw the reader in a little deeper. The theme is supported by the characters of Mrs. Kippersalt, aka Pertelotte. There are references here to works of Chaucer in how characters are named, which literature lovers might find enjoying. But the author also makes a point of what a strong, capable woman she is, running a business of her own. She does have her weaknesses, but they are more generated from guilt than self-promotion. Enola’s visits to this shop are also the reminders of what the keepsakes of almost hundred years ago looked like and the strangeness of the things in which humans find amusement. A heartily satisfying string of entertaining near-catastrophes, replete with narrow squeaks and spectral howls.

Customer reviews

To acquire the supplies she needs for her disguise, Enola visits a shop run by a woman who calls herself Pertelote. It transpires that Pertelote is an accomplice to Watson's kidnapping, and that Pertelote's sister is behind it. Now, while it does take some clever work on Enola's part to figure that out, she would never have been in position to do so without this huge coincidence.

The start of the book shows us Enola as any other teenage girl would be – hurt, lonely, sulking. But once she is in action, these instances of melodramatic pining are lesser and lesser. She makes mistakes, but she holds on to her courage and although frightened at times, doesn’t give up. Life here could be full of horrors and the author keeps up that quotient in the story as she features a baby whose face was eaten by Rats. Imagine growing up like that and what it would do to the mental balance of such person. But it also shows the strength of character for Enola – someone who has grown up in countryside – to come face-to-face with such horrors and not lose the desire to help them. The plot is interesting, although it’s way to fast paced to be immersive. I understand this may be because this is a graphic novel. The plot is also way to convenient for there to be any real stakes. The climax is practically non existent because of the fast paced nature of the book. It’s just one action after the other, and we never really get a break to process what is going on. London, world’s largest metropolis was also the world’s worst governed. London was disorganized into more than two hundred boroughs, each with its own records-keeper, tax-collector, constables, etc. Enola is very classist, to the point of typically assuming that the things the lower classes say to her are just so much nonsense. I’m hoping she will soon realize her mistake, as often the reader is well aware that it’s not nonsense if only Enola would actually listen. She does, however, understand how the classes work, and knows she’s safer on the streets if she looks like she’s lower class. She also uses disguises of different classes to gain access to different places. Puzzles she made a much more satisfactory man than a woman, and it was narrow-minded of Pertelote to think otherwise” ….wut? This is about a woman who has literally no face left, disguising herself as a man to take revenge on Dr. Watson…. And this is what we have to say about it? Okay then.
