About this deal

How was it any different than USB-A? USB-A had 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.2. There wasn't a cable issue with 1.1 or 2.0, but 3 and 3.2 it started to matter.

USB 4 is also designed to be compatible with Thunderbolt 3, although we should note it’s up to the device manufacturer to implement that compatibility – a decision made because the likes of smartphone makers won’t want to. So while this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, it’s expected that PC vendors will include Thunderbolt 3, although that doesn’t have to be the case – and thus there could be a bit of confusion therein. a b c "SuperSpeed USB Consumer Cert Final 2" (PDF). Introduction

Due to overmanufacturing in late 2022, the price of external NAND-based SSD storage has steadily fallen throughout 2023, so Samsung here might be in for a severe dose of market forces after launch, pushing these prices down.

Technically speaking, neither USB 3.2 nor USB 3.1 by itself can deliver video. Using DisplayLink technology, one can convert and compress video into USB data that goes out to a specially-enabled hub or portable monitor. However, few people today use DisplayLink devices.

Key Features

We’d love to tell you about Samsung’s new Magician 8.0 software release and how it makes the most of this storage device, except we’ve not seen it. USB3.0 Standard-A receptacle (top, in the blue color " Pantone 300C"), Standard-B plug (middle), and Micro-B plug (bottom)

USB 3.1 Gen 2 is capable of 10 Gbps transfer speeds---that's called SuperSpeed+. Technically, it accomplishes this by using 128b/132b encoding in a full-duplex communications mode. Full-duplex communication is exciting because that means information can be transferred and received at the same time. That's why it's faster. USB 3.2 Work Is On the Way for the Linux 4.18 Kernel". Those drives peak at about around 1,000MB/s for reads and 900MB/s writes, but in ideal conditions, the Elite-X PRO can be 50% faster than that. The first aspect of the T9 that makes it different to the T7 and T7 Shield is that this drive has an odd wavy rubberised outer covering. We’re pretty sure that this is bonded to the metal interior shell of the drive, so it’s a permanent feature. Unless one moves to the high-end of the capacity line with the 2TB models, the cost-per-GB metric (above 20¢ per GB) is simply not competitive against the SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps external SSDs that have taken over the market in the last couple of years. At the 2TB capacity point, excellent external SSDs of this type are available at less than 15¢ per GB, while the best that the above three families can offer is 0.175¢ per GB. As adoption increases, the price should go down, but right now, there is no denying that there is a premium. Is the premium worth it? We review selected components from the above list in an attempt to find the answer. The Test Devices

This cost issue – which will doubtless be more pronounced in the early stages of USB 4 development – means that older USB ports will likely hang around for some time yet (as we’ve already seen since the introduction of USB Type-C). Remember that the fancy new (more expensive) USB 4 connectors won’t be needed for all use cases, such as hooking up a simple keyboard – which doesn’t need great chunks of bandwidth – so older-gen USB ports will still be included, probably in the majority, on desktop PCs and laptops; at least in the nearer future.
