About this deal

Nose: Sugar, confectionaries, bubblegum. After the initial strength of the sweetness - malt and cream come to the forefront, with vanilla and citrus making an appearance as well. This is a light nose, indicative of its 80 proof. Malt, caramel, vanilla beans, toffee, fruit, oily spice and a bit of copper. It might be a bit limited in scope, but the richness of what’s there is quite nice. A Blend of Two Premium Irish Whiskey Styles, Aged in Two Types of Wood to create Writers’ Tears Double Oak. Malt, caramel, toffee, orchard fruit, vanilla, dynamic dark sweets, creamy vanilla and some copper with a bit of lemon and hazelnuts. I’m a bit surprised by the richness. Whiskybase B.V. In the mouth: Quite a chocolate note on arrival then stone fruit. Plum, peach and then the white grape again. Some citrus zest with mild baking spice, oak tannins and a touch of cask char. The Walsh’s clever twist on Irish whiskey blending was to eschew the use of grain whiskey in their creations. The Irishman whiskey began as a blend of single malt and single pot still whiskeys, and soon added small batch or single cask Irish single malts under the same brand. Writerṣ Tears” is a unique old Irish Pot still Whiskey. It is a vatting of Single Malt and Single Pot Still whiskeys. Distilled from 60% malt and 40% pot Still (No Grain). Writers Tears is triple distilled, non -peated and matured and aged in American Oak bourbon casks.

Finally, the Mizunara Cask. Sadly much like Ireland's Rugby World Cup tournament this whiskey just didn't really work for me. I really struggled to get the chocolate, coconut and fruitiness that you expect to get from Mizunara Oak. Instead this just became a spice driven cask fest that dominated the spirit and detracted from the whole experience. This has been flirting with a 3, so possibly I'm mellowing in my old age. Yet again my dalliances with Travel Retail only result in disappointment. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.On the nose: A definite sandalwood note on the nose along with pine, white chocolate and caramel. Underneath this are flashes of apple and pear and eventually some citrus zest. The nose does feel rather tight and closed though. Water does improve things making the nose more overtly fruity with dry woody spice and citrus oils. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. While we have divested from our own distillery, it is a significant milestone in our whiskey journey. I can’t even imagine what the Writer’s Tears Irish Whiskey would be like at cask strength. I saw that they put one out so I guess I’m going to have to do some hunting. Away from the writers’ enjoyment of a dram, the Irish whiskey barons were rebelling against the emergence of what they saw as inferior grain from Coffey Stills. The barons were protective of the traditions that had made their success possible and at that time, one whiskey style was held high above all others. Known as the ‘champagne of Irish whiskey’ it was a master blend of pot still and malt whiskeys, both distilled in copper pots. It was enjoyed by many of the great Irish writers of the day… of course less for its inspirational qualities than its full-bodied, flavoursome taste and creamy texture! It was said that they enjoyed it so much, that when they cried, their tears were of whiskey.
