About this deal

Alan Burnett · Paul Dini · Ty Templeton Batman: The Adventures Continue (Volume 1 (Digital)) was a limited digital-first comic book series, published by DC Comics starting in April 2020. The series took place during the early days of Tim Drake as Robin and is a sequel to Batman: The Animated Series. This really does feel like a continuation of Batman: The Animated Series thanks in no small part to Paul Dini and Alan Burnett, who were both integral to the show. There are a few ongoing story-lines as well as a couple of stand-alones, so it works nicely. It has some original stories but the main story retells the Red Hood but with a more PG feel. It is a very different take on the tale but the basics are still there and that brought down my enjoyment a bit. It didn't have that wow factor because I knew the basic outcome of the story. Batman: The Adventures Continue (2020-) #14". ComiXology. Archived from the original on October 20, 2020 . Retrieved October 20, 2020. As for Templeton, he just feels “elated…honored…thrilled. All of the good words.” As he explains, “I’m so happy to be any part of this wonderful franchise and all the great moments it’s brought fans.”

It’s great to see classic DC characters we never had a chance to use in the animated series, like Azrael and Red Hood, appear in animated toy form,” says Dini. Gone are the likes of recognisable names like Deathstroke and Red Hood, instead mostly replaced by a corruption storyline featuring the old mayor of Gotham. It's obviously a conscious choice, and while hewing closer to the source material will probably please most people, I found this volume less compelling than the first for this reason. I've seen Batman fight mobsters and such before, there's like 5 seasons of it - let's do something different for a change? In related news, DC Comics recently announced sequel titles to their 2021-released Batman ’89 and Superman ’78 comic series. DC Comics digital-first mini-series available in both digital and print editions; series complete and on sale So I think my biggest criticism here is a bit of ret-conning of Batman's history. They recreate something from the comics that wasn't part of the original show for various reasons. I think it may be a mistake, I'm not sure. Season II introduces the Court of Owls into the DC Animated Universe. Zatanna and Jimmy "the Jazzman" Peake also return in Season II. The chance to return to that world, with two creative partners who were also involved in shaping it, has been a real thrill for Dini. “Ty Templeton was able to capture all the depth we were trying to go for with the characters and even then some,” Dini shares. “He brought such incredible emotion to the characters and complexity with the stories. To work with him again is a dream come true.”

Overall, this was a joy to read. If you loved the animated series you get stories and art that perfectly capture the feel of that beloved series. You get a Lex Luthor/Superman guest shot. You get the Red Hood. You get Deathstroke trying to recruit Batman's helpers (Batgirl and Robin) and you get a sweet Christmas tale with Ivy, Harley and that Ventriloquist villain...Scarface (I think). what's not to love. Jason Todd is revealed to have been the second Robin all along and meets a similar fate to his original counterpart in being beaten half to death and then blown up by the Joker, believed to be dead, only to show up later as the Red Hood.

Is this just a nostalgia grab aimed at almost-middle-aged dudes who grew up watching the series? Eh, probably. Does it feel good to jump down that rabbit hole remembering what it was like watching these adventures after school? Sure does.
