About this deal

Before she exploded, Agnes Nutter (Witch) was very clear: the world will end on a Saturday. So, naturally, everything is going to shit, but an unlikely pairing—an angel and a demon—have grown accustomed to living among the mortals here on Earth and team up to sabotage the End Times. From antics with the Antichrist (he’s taken home by the wrong family and named Adam) to the summoning of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (they’ve got some big personalities), Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett have spun a raucous tale about Good, Evil, and everything in between. There’s a snobbishness in our literary world that equates laughter with shallowness. How untrue that is. There’s nothing shallow about my favourite comic writers – Nora Ephron, Nancy Mitford, Beryl Bainbridge (her description of undignified middle-aged sex in Injury Time strangely lingers). But for me, and I suspect many others, the funniest books of all time are the Just William books.

For a witty and hilarious fake dating, enemies-to-lovers romance about two people who are forced to be around each other because their siblings are getting married, The Unhoneymooners is one of the best slow-burn romantic comedy books for you. Me Talk Pretty One Day is in two parts, one about Sedaris’s childhood and family, and the second is about his experience in France as a foreigner. The winners of the Laugh Out Loud Book Awards ( The Lollies) 2023 have been announced in a digital awards ceremony, hosted by author Ella McLeod. It is funny and touching, and his accounts of trying to learn French will leave you spitting up the windows. His characters and situations are vivid and beautiful, and will remain with you long after you’ve finished the book and been given filthy looks by your fellow commuters. This is a book so funny it will make you feel alive. Fans of Kulti, The Wall of Winnipeg and Me and slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romance will love From Lukov with Love. This comical sports-themed romance will end with you gushing about Jasmine and Lukov and falling into a YouTube figure skating rabbit hole.

Charlotte is a twenty something year-old, unemployed gal with a cheating ex in New York. When she drops off her wedding dress at a thrift shop, she discovers a beautiful dress with a note sewn into the tulle signed by Reed Eastwood. Agatha Runcible makes an appearance at the breakfast table in 10 Downing Street attired in Hawaiian fancy dress David Lodge Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh

Congratulations to the past winners of the Lollies!

But if Freddie dominates both school and novel, there’s also a wonderful supporting cast, and I particularly like Pierce Carroll, the inept tutor, well intentioned but entirely incapable of controlling his class. There’s Boney Lewis, a charming, drunken actor famed for his Napoleon, an off-stage cameo from Noël Coward and a great comic set piece involving a hysterically pretentious production of King John, full of mad acting and mime. Also, Adrian’s sensitivity regarding Mrs Braithwaite’s defection from Labour to the SDP (“It’s a sad day when families are split by politics”) encouraged me to express my own political ideas, for example regarding Michael Foot’s self-esteem (“How must it feel to be called a scruffy old tramp all the time?”). And, if he hadn’t reported that Pandora Braithwaite’s horse (whose previous owners had lived in Zimbabwe) was called Ian Smith, would I have noticed that an acquaintance of mine was fostering a greyhound called Ted Hughes? I don’t know. I only know that this glorious book made me laugh the most, and the best. This is a humorous 'Under Milk Wood-style' story set in a quiet, Welsh mining village. The central character is a self-deluded, Quixotic character - Horatio ap Llewelyn Evans - a self-appointed leader of men, convinced that the sleepy valley town needs waking up and converting to communism. In fact he wants it to become a fully independent soviet socialist republic.
