About this deal

Persistent elevations in blood pressure can have serious consequences. Sustained hypertension is associated with damage to the eyes, ears, brain, and kidneys. 6,7 A hypertensive emergency occurs when the patient has a marked elevation of blood pressure and is at risk for development of end-organ damage or vascular incidents, such as cerebral hemorrhage causing neurologic signs or intraocular hemorrhage causing blindness. 7 Monitoring Primary hypertension (meaning high blood pressure not secondary to another disease) is not common in dogs and certainly much less common than people.

Blood pressure (BP) is commonly measured in dogs and cats in an emergency setting. The need of a rapid and accurate triage evaluation has induced emergency veterinarians to prefer peripheral pulse palpation to the challenging Doppler BP evaluation as a first approach to the critically ill patient (Ateca etal., 2018). However, metatarsal pulses palpation cannot be considered a substitute of BP measurement, and the need of non‐invasive blood pressure measurement devices (NIBP) preferably small, lightweight and portable, still remains a point to improve in the emergency setting. Treatment for hypotension is always an emergency. Dogs diagnosed with low blood pressure require immediate in-hospital treatments such as IV fluid therapy, blood transfusions and fast-acting injectable medications.Primary hypertension is caused by an imbalance between cardiac output and systemic vascular resistance that has no known cause; therefore, it is sometimes referred to as idiopathic hypertension. 6,7 It is rare in small animals.

Once your dog is comfortable wearing the cuff, find a quiet place to perform the reading, such as on their bed or in their crate. You want some place where they will be comfortable laying down on their side or belly for about 10 to 15 minutes without moving around. The fluid bag tubing connects to a pressure transducer, which is connected by a cable to the physiologic monitor, mounted on a board placed at the level of the patient’s heart. At the other end of the transducer, semi-rigid tubing connects to the arterial catheter’s T-set. Labato MA. Antihypertensives. St. Louis: Elsevier, 2015, pp 840-845.If your dog is behaving normally and not exhibiting any signs of illness, then his blood pressure is almost guaranteed to be within the normal range.

Indications for Measurement

There are two components to blood pressure: systolic and diastolic. Systolic blood pressure is the maximum pressure during a heartbeat, while diastolic blood pressure is the minimum pressure between heartbeats. Blood pressure readings are normally written as one number over another number – for example: 120/80. Systolic blood pressure is the top number and diastolic blood pressure is the bottom number.
