About this deal

If you are fighting a flea infestation in the home, a Frontline spot-on product can break the flea life cycle. The reason they aren’t as effective is the same reason they’re safe to use around children and spray over every inch of your home. They don’t contain the same strong insecticides that the more powerful flea treatments do. How do I get the most out of a cat flea spray? Following application of any Frontline product, it’s important to note that because fipronil causes neurologic overexcitement in the flea prior to killing it, more fleas may become visible and active following application of the product.

Frontline Spray is also far more cost-effective, especially since it can be used on both dogs and cats in a multiple pet household. Depending on the product used and level of infestation, it can range from 24 hours up to several months. Often, it can take three to four months to get rid of an infestation in your home, but fleas on your pets should die within the first 18 to 24 hours. What chemicals kill fleas and their eggs? Cat flea treatments take many forms, from topical spot-on and oral preventatives to medicated shampoos, sprays, and combs. The best cat flea treatment may vary depending on your cat’s age, the severity of the infestation, and other factors that impact safety. Why Trust Cats.comDo not exceed the recommended dosage. Ensure treated animals are allowed to dry in a well-ventilated room. Do not confine animals to an enclosed space or pet carrier until the coat is fully dry. When treating young animals ensure they do not become cold while their coat dries. Once treated, keep animals away from fires and other sources of heat for a minimum of 30 minutes and until the coat is fully dry.

You should aim to use a flea spray to help stop fleas residing in certain places in your home, while another more suitable (stronger) flea treatment gets to work on ridding your cat of them.

Topical and oral flea treatments typically contain one of two types of insecticide: adulticides or insect growth regulators. Adulticides kill only adult fleas, which account for roughly 5% of the infesting flea population. Although adulticides are sometimes used on their own, particularly in oral medications, they’re often combined with insect growth regulators which slow the infestation by preventing the fleas from reproducing. While Frontline products should never be ingested, fipronil generally appears to have a low potential for toxicity both topically and even if accidentally ingested. The first ingredient is brewer’s yeast, which is added as a source of vitamin B1. While there is a large group of people who tout it as a flea deterrent, I’ve not found any controlled studies that demonstrate vitamin B1’s ability to deter fleas. In fact, the evidence points to the contrary. Additionally, I don’t see any evidence that consuming apple cider vinegar will acidify the body enough to deter fleas, and if your cat was consuming enough vinegar to acidify their blood, they might also experience unwanted effects. Similarly, there isn’t a lot of evidence showing that eating catnip will help to deter fleas.

To make your flea spray, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 20 drops of essential oils. Mix them thoroughly and rub them into your cat’s fur. Let it sit on her fur for 5 minutes before rinsing off in lukewarm water. This is a natural and chemical-free way to control fleas on your kitty without spending tons of money at the vet’s office. You can also use orange or lemon essential oils if you have any allergies that could be triggered by using peppermint oil; everyone’s body reacts differently! 5) Eucalyptus Oil + Water Kittens are especially delicate, and some flea treatments are not safe. Follow the advice of your vet. Also, never use medication designed for dogs or adult cats — these could be deadly to a kitten. When considering use of either the Frontline Spray or the Frontline spot-on products, it’s important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Can I use a flea spray on my cat?

Kittens can become infested with fleas virtually as soon as they are born, and while fleas are easy to treat and resolve in older cats with a spot-on treatment or other method, few products are safe to use on very young kittens. CAPSTAR tablets start killing fleas in 30 minutes and achieve greater than 90 percent effectiveness within six hours. In addition to its fast-acting effectiveness, one of the big advantages to CAPSTAR Fast-Acting Oral Fela Treatment for Cats is that its dosing doesn't change depending on your cat's size, as is the case with a lot of topical treatments. Instead, CAPSTAR will work for any cat or kitten more than two pounds and over four weeks old. Application method. The most common flea treatments are topical spot-on solutions, tablets, and powders. Topical spot-on solutions definitely lead the way in terms of effectiveness, but they can be accidentally ingested and some leave an oily residue. Tablets are also a good option if your kitten has sensitive skin, but they usually need to be given more often. Powders are a good short-term option but need frequent reapplication.

In our experience, Adams Plus is one of the most effective flea killing sprays out there today. It offers the fastest relief from biting and itching for cats, and makes short work of fleas that are dormant in carpets and upholstery. Avoid using pyrethroids in cats as they can be toxic. These are more commonly found in some dog flea treatment products, but are still occasionally seen in cat products. Pyrethrins and permethrin products can also be dangerous to use in cats, but each cat has a different level of sensitivity. One cat may have a seizure from one drop of a pyrethrin or permethrin product while another may have no problem at all. Delivery Method Thankfully, most respectable manufacturers have the sense not to put harsh insecticides in spray bottles that they’re intending on selling to the general public, but that still depends on them being used as per the instructions. S-methoprene: Like pyriproxyfen, this chemical mimics natural hormones, preventing the fleas from ever growing up and making eggs of their own. Tony, this is an interesting one! I’m not a vet, but here are my thoughts. It looks like this product is intended to be taken internally to deter fleas and strengthen your cat’s immune system. Starting with the latter, the idea that you can deter fleas by strengthening the immune system is…weird. A healthy immune system is what causes the allergic reaction to flea bites. A strong immune system is fine, but a stronger immune response is not necessarily what you want when dealing with fleas.

It’s important to note here that the spray cannot be used in a single application spot at the base of the head the way the spot-on products can be used. Spot-on products have a carrier agent that allow the drug to spread throughout the oils of the coat over about 18 to 24 hours. The spray must be used more liberally across the entire coat and body to be effective. Mix one part apple cider vinegar with two parts water and spritz away. There is a reason why veterinarians recommend that their clients use a diluted apple cider vinegar solution to repel fleas. This solution is not only completely natural, but it also smells good and will keep your home smelling fresh and clean as well. Your cat may not enjoy being sprayed down with ACV, but there are plenty of ways to entice them into letting you help them if you play your cards right! 3) Corn Starch + water The best flea spray you can use on your cat isn’t bought at the store—it’s made in your kitchen! These homemade flea sprays are safe, easy to make, and inexpensive, but they’re incredibly effective at killing the pesky fleas that are so difficult to get rid of. Flea Cats 1) Lavender + water While Bravecto may offer up to 3 months of protection, this effect has only been documented in cats over 6 months of age. It’s also worth noting that neurological abnormalities have been reported in cats treated with Bravecto—even those without a history of neurologic conditions. Prescription is required, so consult your veterinarian prior to use. What We Liked:
