About this deal

Sitcom Game On was about a pair of twentysomethings, the sexy Mandy Wilkins and the nerdish Martin Henson who shared the flat (Flat 7, 23 Wellington Road) of fellow twentysomething and agoraphobic Matthew Malone. In 1991, Samantha who was Samantha Janus at the time, represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in Rome with the song A Message To Your Heart, but finished in joint 10th place with Ireland. The first series is a little darker and a bit more subversive as Matthew's rampant sexism, perversions and occasional casual racism are on display. Chaplin is a better actor than Stuke and his charm and good looks make it more interesting, as on the surface you'd expect Matthew to be doing pretty well in life. A couple of the highlights of the series involve Matthew's cross-dressing and his brief venture playing in a band who lives in the flat upstairs.

All three series of the show are available on DVD. The first series DVD is the only one with any special features, which include Chaplin's best moments as Matthew Malone from the first series and character photo galleries. It was the first time I’d heard boys’ sex obsessions vocalised so frankly (a precursor to The Inbetweeners, perhaps, in that sense) and with the kind of swearing you usually didn’t hear within the cosy confines of a studio sitcom living room. “Skunk p–––ies”, “double-hard b–––––s”, and “the dog’s b–––––ks” were all new ones on me at the time. I vividly recall repeating its filthiest lines at school. Even Men Behaving Badly – the joke of which was that Gary and Tony were old enough to know better – didn’t have that puerile punchiness. I was just lying in bed wondering why women loathe and despise me and suddenly I was wide awake. Series 1

Like many sitcoms, the first series has that sense of a feeling out process. It's trying to find its rhythm, led by Ben Chaplin’s performance as Matt. He’s the embodiment of Nineties machismo: sat around reading loaded magazine, reenacting scenes from Reservoir Dogs, and waxing his surfboard in the living room. Even the title of the series comes from his laddish catchphrase – “Game on, Martin, game on” – accompanied by a mini fist bump. I can't believe she's gone into the bedroom with him. I can't believe she's gonna shag that psycho when she's never had the common decency to give me or you one. Writers: Andrew Davies, Bernadette Davis / Theme Tune: Where I Find My Heaven by the Gigolo Aunts / Producer: Geoffrey PerkinsFirst of all let me say that I have never seen the first series (with Ben Chaplin) so I can't judge if this is better or worse. But what I do know is that if you can't laugh with the humour on 'Game On' you should really wonder if you have any sense of humour at all... She began a second chapter in her professional life in 2007, taking on the role of the ferocious Ronnie Mitchell in EastEnders. Ronnie was a whirlwind, carving a destructive path through Albert Square, and an instant fan favourite. But the spotlight for a soap star can be withering and, after four years, she stepped away. She would return on and off to the part until 2017, when Ronnie was finally killed off, drowning in a swimming pool with her sister Roxy. Game On was nominated for Best Comedy (Programme or Series) at the 1997 BAFTAs, [6] along with Absolutely Fabulous and Father Ted; the category was won by Only Fools and Horses. [7] DVD releases [ edit ] In fact, that’s a misconception about Game On. It was co-created and written by Bernadette Davis, in her late twenties at the time of the first series. In hindsight, it’s surprising that a show which so accurately captured zeitgeist of the lads’ era was written by a young woman. (Though, to be fair to Pegg, co-creator and writer of the first two series, Andrew Davies, was 60 when Game On started.) Bernadette Davis wrote Game On’s third series alone and would later write the BBC Three sitcom Some Girls, which ran between 2012 and 2014.She initially planned a career in singing and represented the UK in the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest, performing A Message To Your Heart and finishing 10th. Later, her mother married a doctor and the family moved to Edinburgh. She later lived for a time on the QE2, with her grandmother, a noted choreographer. (In 2009, her birth father took his own life. At the time father and daughter had not spoken for several months because of what she regarded as his unacceptable behaviour at her wedding.) Game On was devised by Bernadette Davis and Andrew Davies. Davies is mostly famous for his costume dramas, such as Pride and Prejudice) and as time has gone on, Game On is very much a historical sitcom as it rides the wave of the nineties.
