About this deal

Russell uses this because he wants the audience to think that Briggs is changing. Usually he would be too concerned about his reputation as a teacher to go to the fair.

If Mrs Kay can influence a grown adult, then she is certainly impressionable to these young children. In searching for young school children to feature in the film, director Pedr James spent a month visiting schools around Liverpool to find "the right kids". The child actors came from several schools around the Liverpool area although none had any real acting experience. Filming took place through April to May 1977. [3] The film was shot on 16mm film by a first-time director in three weeks with a largely untrained cast. [2]

Our Day Out Coursework                                          Victoria  Olubi

He is absolutely right because if Mrs Kay had listened to his advice, the children would have not stole from the café. Mrs Kay in this scene is wrong by being way too supportive of the children. She knows that they didn’t even have enough money to go on the trip, let alone by sweets. By allowing them to steal she is not preparing them for good socialization in the future.

Tie pulled down conveys his relaxed attitude. He is no longer worried about maintaining his reputation or at the fact he has stepped out of line. He isn’t concerned anymore about setting a good example for the school. Here Briggs uses a stern tone. Russell uses this as a rhetorical question because really Briggs is telling them that they won’t smoke. Later on Russell uses the scene when Briggs and andrews are having a conversation to accentuate the children’s problems. And convey how Briggs doesn’t understand the children’s situations. Mrs Kay on the other hand, tries to make him realise that these children are being deprived and all that she can do is allow them to have fond memories of high school. Russell makes us feel empathy for Briggs because he trusted them and gave them a chance but they have just betrayed him. However Russell also wants us to feel empathy for the children. If Briggs had understood their difficult circumstances from the start and treated them with a little respect then they wouldn’t of let him down. Whereas Mrs Kay defends and respects the children and this is reciprocated.

On the coach in scene two, the audience can read that the children are not at all organised or well mannered. These children get little freedom at home, so they deserve to have some freedom at school. Mr Briggs is narrow minded and only thinks of himself. Mr Briggs is very professional with his job maybe too professional. He thinks Mrs Kay doesn’t have the right image as a teacher and that her attitude is too casual. The attitude of the café workers indicates that they are prejudice. Mrs Kay gives these children so many chances because she knows that when they go out into the world on their own, no one will be there to support them. Therefore showing that she is not very supportive of the children and has little belief in them. Carol has become attached to her and needs support and encouragement to be able to work hard and leave Liverpool, but Mrs Kay doesn’t give her this. Mrs Kay’s good behaviour, open-mindness and tolerance is a good example to the children because she is impressionable. This also shows that he has never taken time to get to know children and find out about what they like or need. His behaviour here contradicts Mrs Kay’s attitude. She just lets them eat what they want and allows them to have fun. When Mr Briggs finds out about Andrews smoking, he doesn’t shout or go mad. He remains calm and takes care. He does his job very well.
