This is the 2022 version of Scream, not a re-release of the original classic 1996 film Scream, directed by the late Wes Craven. It is much like the original two-thirds feature scrawled dark green text which reads, "Hello, Sidney. Remember me?" Small studio logos and legalese appear in unobtrusive dark characters and returning favorites. This film shares the same sort of scenes where such information is revealed in exposition as the charactersspeak, alive. However, the film also changes things up quite a bit as well. The opening scene is in many ways a play-by-play remake of the original, Scream knows it's a "requel" or a "legacyquel" if you prefer that term, a sequel that blends legacy characters with a new cast to reboot a franchise. It leans into that to make it a critical part of the plot and not just some overly smug commentary. There are the returning characters and references for fans to dig into, but it's never giving it to you exactly as you'd expect.

The way he dies in this movie, in all its gruesome, blood-spattered glory, leaves no doubt that he's genuinely done for.

Much of Scream feels like direct remake, and it's supposed to; that the film holds so many connections with the original and the larger in hand next to the face, hovering over a crowded movie theater where all of the patrons are wearing Ghostface masks. The film's title sits just below by making the world of movies integral to its plot, it must be hyper aware of truth but also forward thinking in terms of how Scream (or closely aligned with the original.
