Further controls and customisation options are available via the Headphones Connect app, available for Android and iOS. The options contained within aren’t terribly useful, but if you want to tweak how much noise-cancelling is deployed for certain activities, or disable the auto-off feature, this is where you need to do it. Sony WI-1000X – Moving on, the WI-1000X is probably Sony's finest in-the-ear wireless earphone model. Through incorporating advanced noise cancelling technology, these headphones are capable of dynamically adjusting to ambient conditions. So, if you move from your bedroom to a traffic-filled street, your headphones will know, and deliver audio which lets you hear external noises, without compromising your enjoyment. The model received a 5/5 rating from What Hi-Fi?, with the reviewer praising the model's ability to balance noise cancellation with audio clarity. The ideal model for travellers who want a lightweight model with some extra add-ons. Adaptive Sound Control, a feature on XM3, detects your activity and adjusts the ambient sound settings to suit. However, the XM4 have a more intelligent version of the tech that can learn to recognise locations you frequently visit and tweak the sound accordingly. The other design change is the new flush fit that changes out the old padding on the bridge for something a bit more cushiony. This makes these over-ear headphones more comfortable, and less dorky-looking when they’re on your head. Sony’s also deepened the earcup and changed out the silver accents on the side of the headphones for a stylish copper tone instead. Neither model is ridiculously expensive, either. So far, there's not much to choose between them. But there are some differences. Firstly, the build quality of the QC35 is better than on the WH-1000XM3. The QC35 comes with leather pads and extra headband padding, and will generally resist scuffing more effectively.

Arguably the biggest changes to the Sony WH-1000XM3 compared to the XM2 are found in the design of the headphones: they’re lighter than the previous model and more form-fitting as well.

Sony WH-1000XM3 – The most important current model, the WH-1000XM3 has a headband-style design, and features wireless technology. But wireless connectivity isn't the main selling point with these headphones. Instead, their noise cancellation technology is what catches the eye. As Sony states, these headphones “take you even deeper into silence”, allowing listeners to focus on the music they love, without distractions. The critics have responded favourably, with Expert Review praising the sound quality and comfort provided by these elite headphones, which should be suitable for a general audience. Sony's headphone collection offers a wide range of cutting edge audio technology, from gym-friendly wire-free in the ear models, to heavy duty wraparound headphones that will make your favourite albums sound better than ever. But this quality comes at a price, especially at the top of the Sony range. Thankfully, there are always ways to save on audio upgrades. Microphone Quality – The XM3 has a better microphone set up than the Bose, meaning better call quality.
When Sony created the XM3, it got the recipe spot on. At the time, they were as close to a perfect pair of noise-cancellers as one could find. Today, they're still great all-rounders and a superb buy for the money. The last aspect of performance worth analyzing is the 1000XM3’s call quality. In several phone calls made with the headphones, the people we spoke to reported that we sounded clear – if a bit quieter – than if we had used the phone’s built-in microphone. This is likely due to the extra microphones Sony has embedded into the headphones themselves.

The Sony WF-1000XM4 are a breeze to set up, particularly if you’re using an Android phone. They support Google Fast Pair so all you need to do is take the buds out of their case and you’ll receive a pop-up prompting you to connect them to your device. It worked perfectly with my Realme 6i, but pairing them with my iPhone 8 was hardly a chore – you simply connect as normal via the Bluetooth menu on the settings screen.
The QN1e chip has been replaced by the Integrated Processor V1 to enhance ANC effectiveness, while the 6mm speaker drivers have been tweaked to improve low-end performance. The buds now operate over Bluetooth 5.2, and there’s support for Sony’s Hi-Res LDAC codec in addition to SBC and AAC (the two codecs supported by the XM3). While it will connect with each of my computers etc, it refuses to connect to my partner's MacBook Pro even when its little blue light is flashing indicating it is pairing mode - it just doesn't appear in the list of nearby devices. Have given up trying to get a connection.When it is connected to a computer, the controls for the headphones via the app on my iPhone no longer operate of course, because the headphones are now bluetooth connected elsewhere. So no way of adjusting the Equaliser. Like the Bose 700, the WH1000XM3 uses touch panels on the earcups to control play, pause, skip and volume. Buttons and sliders would be an easier means of control, perhaps, but less elegant design-wise. Take a bit of time to get used to the touch controls and you'll probably end up liking them, despite the occasional missed or misinterpreted tap.
