About this deal

If you go for 105, on the other hand, you could swap to Ultegra or Dura-Ace gradually as each component wears out. That might be attractive, but only if you’re realistically likely to do this. I replaced the long cage Tiagra 4700 with a shortcage, and went for the 105 10 speed (5700) which you would think would be a straight swap... It's not.

edit: just look at side-by-side comparison pictures of older (sis-ratio) derailleurs and the new-line 9000-6800-5800-4700 rds. they hardly have any resemblance in terms of fixing bolt position compared to pivot bolts, and their side plates differ as well. The fact that the 105 groupset is 11-speed is what sets it apart from Shimano Tiagra, that being only 10-speed. Whereas Tiagra is compatible with a 10-speed system. The large chainring is good for teeth between 46 and 52. There’s also a built-in lever reach adjustment screw. A Rapidfire lever set is also available for use on flat bars; this retains the gear indicator window. Shimano Tiagra Cassette If you do want to take the upgrade route, you need to upgrade a large number of the Tiagra groupset components at once to make it work.If you look just above the final box under where the headline says "Verdict" you'll find 2 links to the cheapest prices we could find on the web. So in answer to your question. Yes we can, and we do already. It might even have saved you 20 seconds of your time if you'd seen it! Then you have to factor in whether the shifting control levers have one additional position than that found in Tiagra groupsets. Shimano 105 Groupset Upgrades The 105 hydraulic STI units for disc brakes are 11-speed, as you'd expect, while the Tiagra are 10-speed. The new 105 R7000 STI units are considerably streamlined compared to both their predecessors and the Tiagra versions.

Manufacturers like Shimano will produce various types of components at different levels. This gives cyclists options when it comes to buying a road bike gear or a bike. My plan to increase the size of my cassette to 32 teeth got very complicated when I was informed that Tiagra had a different cable pull to 105. Phase 1 saw me making do with 30 teeth which works fine with the 105 mech( despite it having a nominal maximum of 28 teeth). Admittedly, the Tiagra shifting isn't as light but it's forgivable considering the price difference. The hoods are comfortable to perch on and the levers to use, and there’s a solid feel to the shifting and braking. Right now my fitness isn't what it was so finding myself spinning on the smaller front ring just for bigger hills, which I never used to need to do. However I think this will only be tempory as fittness is noticably getting better again day by day.The 105 isn't the only model that has benefited from upgrades. Tiagra's cables now run beneath the bar tape, which is how the higher-end Shimano groupsets have it.
