About this deal

Both the ATLP120USB and AT-LP140XP are aimed at the DJ community. Despite that fact, the 120 has always been a part of audiophile demo lists. I expect the 140 to occupy the same lists, hence the reason for this review. For customers in outlying areas of the country, the price of the Extended Warranty may be marginally higher, due to the potential for higher collection and redelivery transport costs. Modern DJ turntables often have many features: extra powerful motors, USB interfaces, internal phono preamplifier, double start buttons, control surfaces for DJ software, and so on. With the AT-LP140XP, Audio-Technica has a turntable in its portfolio that appears almost as puristic as a good old Technics. Carefully place the aluminum record platter on the turntable’s center spindle, making sure it fully seats on the spindle.

Question : The AT-LP140XP, AT-LP120XUSB and AT-LP120-USB turntables look very similar. What are the differences between these models? A cover is included, but it’s worth removing it during play to avoid any additional vibration, and loosely cover the turntable when not in use. The 140 is a mature 120. Grown up, rather serious and better built but it retains its DJ aspirations. SOUND QUALITY First, make sure your turntable is on a stable surface or table. Then, place the aluminum platter onto the spindle. There is a switch under the plate to change the voltage from 230 to 115 volts if necessary. The hinges of the dust cover are also only plugged in and not screwed. Incidentally, the hood is flat at the top, without the typical “Technics bump” above the tonearm, which looks stylish but has probably annoyed every DJ who at some point wanted to place a laptop/controller on it. While the AT-LP140XP is seen as a turntable that can be used for everyday home use, it’s really aimed at those that are taking vinyl record playing a bit more seriously, have higher end equipment to pair with this turntable, and are less interested in convenience and more excited about sound quality and playing performance.

Reloop’s beginner-friendly RP-2000 is a case in point, with a direct-drive motor and sturdy feel that belies its price point. Very much built in the mould of the classic SL1200 MK2, the RP-2000 is a bare-bones offering thatdoes everything well, with no frills and no fuss. More info/Buy Pros A more mature version of Audio-Technica’s AT-LP120USB, the AT-LP140XP features Technics-like DJ components such as the platter strobe/light, forward/reverse operation, variable pitch control and a retractable light. With a starting torque of 2.2 kgf.cm, the AT-LP140XP turntable has the highest torque motor of the three. It is a professional-quality turntable designed for commercial use, but the well-damped chassis and platter make it suitable for home use as well. This motor features a reversible direction and offers three pitch adjustment ranges, +/-8%, +/-16% and +/- 24%. All models are fully manual in operation. There are NO automatic functions. To start and stop the rotation of the record platter, press the Start/Stop button at any time. To place the stylus (needle) on the record, raise the tonearm from the tonearm rest by raising the cueing lever. Use your hand to move the tonearm over to the desired location on the record then lower the arm to the record by lowering the lever. At the end of play, raise the arm by raising the cueing lever, use your hand to return the tonearm to the tonearm rest and lower the arm to the rest by lowering the lever.

Audio Technica AT-LP140XP Direct Drive DJ Turntable, Silver Overview

As I say, the Lenco is offered at a much lower price point so the 140 should be sonically superior. Both the AT-LP120-USB and AT-LP140XP turntables use a detachable AC power cord. AC to DC conversion is done inside the turntable. The AT-LP120XUSB turntable uses an AC adapter that handles AC/DC conversion outside the turntable, reducing noise in the signal chain.
