About this deal

Because of his palace upbringing, Cato is well-read, often portrayed as more cerebral and forward-thinking than Macro. Macro is dismissive of this at first, but eventually comes to respect Cato's talent for thinking ahead and seeing "the big picture." Another excellent book in the Cato and Macro series. In this adventure, Macro is newly retired from the Roman army and has moved to Britain to set up a new life with his wife. Macro, along with his mother, is the co-owner of a bar in London and he also plans for a rural retreat in Colchester.

AD 60 and Macro and Cato are enjoying a bit of peace in Camulodunum with their families. Macro has now retired and is serving as the Senior Magistrate while Prefect Cato is still in the army but not on active duty. But their peace doesn’t last long. Governor Suetonius is making an attempt to finally conquer Britannia by defeating the Ordovices and the druids on the Isle of Mona and he wants Cato to assist him. A solid book, well written, quite good plot, classic Scarrow quality, but still it made me feel frustrated, and here is why.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

A.D. 57. Battle-scarred veterans of the Roman army Tribune Cato and Centurion Macro return to Rome. As of 12 March 2018 Scarrow has sold over 4 million copies of the books within Eagles of the Empire in English alone. [1] Cover illustrations [ edit ] So happy Cato and Macro weren’t apart for long. I whizzed through the first half of the book with the anticipation of Cato’s arrival. It was nice to see Macro operate on his own, as he has been overshadowed by Cato for quite a long time. Unfortunately he doesn’t actually achieve much until Cato does arrive which was annoying and hope Scarrow gives Macro the competence and attention he deserves.

Early on Macro encounters members of a gang that are terrorising London business owners and demanding protection money. Macro, of course, is not one to leave the gang alone and gets himself badly beaten up for his troubles. In the end, Macro finds himself battling on several fronts - against not one, but two gangs, against the Roman authorities who seem to turn a blind eye, while also being dragged into a dispute with the Trinovante tribe. n.b. these novellas were available as e-books prior to publication of the full title. Invader series (with T. J. Andrews) [ edit ] The tales follow the life and careers of Centurion Lucius Cornelius Macro and Prefect Quintus Licinius Cato. It’s the year AD60 and both protagonists are once again in Britannia, tasked in maintaining Rome’s tenuous hold of the province. The series, in its entirety, documents Macro and Cato's attempts to live a soldier's simple life, however, their effectiveness as soldiers and Cato's former connections to the Imperial Court make this difficult. Through association with Cato, Macro also finds himself the object of the upper classes' intrigue and struggles for supremacy. The series also features Vespasian and Vitellius as supporting characters, during the formative years of their careers, and foreshadowing their future rivalry for the Imperial throne. This is the twentieth book in the Eagles of the Empire Series, and as usual an excellent read. Full of great characters and with a real sense of life in the Roman Empire. That's not all that has changed: Cato is no longer the scared young man he had been in the first entries; Macro no longer the seasoned Centurion. Now, Macro is retired from active service whilst Cato - who now has a family of his own - has risen in rank above that that Macro ever reached but is still firm friends with the latter. Please get rid of her as Cato deserves a nice lady to settle down with and this relationship just does not work. In 2007 the publisher announced the intention to cease using the word "Eagle" in the title of books in this series, starting with Centurion. The change was apparently because the publisher wanted to attract more new readers to the series. Eagles of the Empire is a series of historical military fiction novels written by Simon Scarrow. The series began in July 2000 with the publication of Under the Eagle, and as of March 2022 there have been 21 novels released in the series, with the 22nd novel due in November 2023. [1] This is another enjoyable read in the series, although I did miss the presence of macro for large swathes of the novel (good news, though: it looks like he's returning in the next instalment). I have to wonder, though, was Apollonius being written as his replacement ...?
