About this deal

Celebrating its own 20th Anniversary this year, Halloween: Resurrection scores a solid 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with Dolby Vision HDR release. Part of the problem for this film that’s plagued all past releases is the film style itself. Intercutting 35mm and SD digital elements is a bit jarring so the appearance of the image can fluctuate rapidly within any given scene. The beginning and the film’s climax where the digital camera foolishness isn’t in play genuinely looks terrific and the most stable. With this new scan, details are much stronger than past releases that suffered from edge enhancement and some form of smoothing - especially that terrible Eco Bridge release. Those troubles thankfully aren’t an issue here and film grain has a more natural quality than before. Those previously mentioned digital camera shots come with their own issues, but they’re baked in and can’t really be helped. The film as a whole – 4K and Blu-ray both – takes a slightly darker appearance compared to Scream’s previous 2014 release, but nothing too dramatic. Tales from the Script" (16:01, HD) is an interview with artist Stef Hutchinson, who was looking to celebrate the 25th Deleted/Extended Scenes – Eight scenes at 12 minutes presumably removed for pacing, titled: Shooting Range, Suicide Thoughts, Shower Mask Visit, Jog to a Hanging Dog, Allyson and Friends at School, Cameron and Cops Don't Mix, Deluxe Banh Mi Cops and Sartain and Hawkins Ride Along. pieced together from two composers. Kane reveals his part as a Donald Pleasance sound-alike, and a shortened post-production period is inspected, It's a neat look at the production in motion, with the crew setting up shots and takes are observed. Farrands also finds some time to interview

The more time I’ve spent with this transfer the better it got. Especially flipping between 4K discs it became easier and easier to appreciate the small differences and overall improvements that steadily start to add up. It may not be the full bright bold orange tone of the 1999 DVD, but, this is a big step in the right direction. This 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray from Scream Factory is easily the best looking and the better color balanced transfer we’ve had for this film in the last 20 years. That 2003 Divimax DVD master really set this film on a tough course for the last few disc releases. This new transfer is a welcome middle ground, cool and autumnal but with more natural primary colors, skin tones, and more orange tones with robust details. Outside of John Carpenter actually getting involved and tweaking the thing himself, this is the best we’re likely to see for a while, and I’m pretty damn happy with the results. In his free time, Shane loves going for runs and playing with his 16-year-old beagle Butterscotch. Butters for short, she has been the greatest love of his and inspires him everyday, both creatively and emtionally. On top of that, he's now a huge collector. He loves Funko Pop, McFarlane Toys, and Neca's huge line of horror figures. In the last two years he has been going to a lot of conversations to buy an unhealthy amount of figures. This has also allowed him to meet some of his favorite filmmakers/actors like Mike Flanagan, Matthew Lillard, John Carpenter, Grace Caroline Curry, Steve Burns and Kathryn Newton. This box set comprises three terrifying films from one of the longest running horror series in cinema history. The new commentary on the theatrical cut with screenwriter Daniel Farrands, actress Marianne Hagan, and moderator Michael Perez is quite good as it gets into the nitty gritty of the how and why of the film. Farrands primarily drives the commentary with Hagan joining in for emphasis. Perez occasionally interjects with questions and clarification. The animated still gallery contains 87 images of posters, promotional photos, behind-the-scenes photos, and memorabilia. The low-budget endeavor retains its obvious production limitations, but That all said, I personally feel that the most interesting era of Halloween films in terms of mistakes or behind-the-scenes stories is definitely the Dimension Films era. Not because any of the films are particularly great, but because of how far the people behind them were willing to go, or not at all. Curse is probably the most distinctive visually, H20 is likely the most popular, and Resurrection is the bottom of the barrel in almost every way. Fans generally like the previous five films to certain degrees, but opinions on the Dimension era are varied. There’s more to those films than just Michael Myers showing up to murder babysitters, and whether you agree with the direction that the storyline took or not, it’s fascinating to see them try and make sense out of it. For me, the first three films are the essence of this franchise, and everything that came after that is questionable.

Disk 1 John Carpenters Halloween 35th Anniversary Edition: The 1978 HALLOWEEN is still the top movie of the series a classic through and through that still holds up like a champ today. If any movie ever proved how much sound design and music can elevate a picture, this one would be it. And the transfer found on the 35th Anniversary Edition of Halloween is the best in my opinion in terms of sound and image quality and is the only way to watch the the film on disk. DP on the film Dean Cundey actually was part of the transfer process on this one and he gave it his green light. Nough said!

Interestingly, the entire Halloween franchise has five distinct eras. The first three films make up the first era, the fourth and fifth film make up the second, the sixth, seventh, and eighth film make up the third, the two Rob Zombie films make up the fourth, and the three Blumhouse films make up the fifth. It’s almost like having a different volume devoted to a single subject sitting on your shelf. Some volumes are more entertaining than others, and it’s easy to ignore the rest. Die-hard fans will defend each and every film in the franchise to their dying breaths (even the recent films, which seemed to stir up far more controversy than any of the previous ones), but it’s clear that the Halloween franchise has outlived many of its peers at this point. After all, nobody is making any A Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th sequels or reboots, though they’ve tried in the past. Even so, there seems to be a constant appetite for Michael Myers that never really gets quenched, regardless of the quality of the films being released. Myers. Reshoots are soon discussed, with Wilbur recast as the masked ghoul, maintaining a healthy attitude about the situation.
