As files are added to an NTFS file system volume, more entries are added to the MFT and the MFT increases in size. When files are deleted from an NTFS file system volume, their MFT entries are marked as free and may be reused. However, disk space that has been allocated for these entries is not reallocated, and the size of the MFT does not decrease. Directory records are housed within the master file table just like file records. Instead of data, directories contain index information.

Depending on the average file size and other variables, when the disk is full, the reserved MFT area or unreserved space on the disk may be allocated first. Volumes with a small number of relatively large files will be allocated in unreserved space first, while volumes with a large number of relatively small files will be allocated in MFT area first. This way I can support a 2800mm x 600mm board, trim both ends, make accurate, clean square cuts every time. When I need to make 7 480mm shelves, I just clamp a stop against the 480mm mark on the fence and lo and behold, I’ve got a production line going.The MFT itself can be defragmented. You should reserve as much space as possible at the beginning of the MFT area before defragmenting the volume to reduce the chance that the MFT area is fully allocated before the defragmentation process is complete. If the MFT area is fully allocated before defragmentation is complete, there must be unallocated space outside the MFT area. When you want to view a file, FAT first reads the file allocation table and assures that it exists. Then FAT retrieves the file by searching the chain of allocation units assigned to the file. With NTFS, as soon as you look up the file, it's there for you to use.

All information about the file, including the file’s size, time and date stamp, permissions, and data content, is stored in the MFT entry or in the MFT external space described by the MFT entry. The Structure of MFT

The NTFS file system contains a file called the master file table, or MFT. There is at least one entry in the MFT for every file on an NTFS file system volume, including the MFT itself. All information about a file, including its size, time and date stamps, permissions, and data content, is stored either in MFT entries, or in space outside the MFT that is described by MFT entries.

More entries will be added to the MFT as files are added to the NTFS file system volume, and the size of the MFT will increase. I keep looking at “better” alternatives but I can achieve speed, accuracy and flexibility here at minimal cost. The master file table allocates a certain amount of space for each file record. The attributes of a file are written to the allocated space in the MFT. Small files and directories (typically 512 bytes or smaller), such as the file illustrated in the next figure, can entirely be contained within the master file table record. MFT Structure

Sometimes, the master file table can be corrupted. If the master file table gets corrupted, the files stored in the NTFS file system volume will be inaccessible. And when you try to access the drive, it will give error messages like “The parameter is incorrect” or “ The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable”. The MFT itself can be defragmented. To reduce the chance of the MFT zone becoming fully allocated before the defragmentation process is complete, leave as much space at the beginning of the MFT zone as possible before defragmenting the volume. If the MFT zone becomes fully allocated before defragmentation has completed, there must be unallocated space outside of the MFT zone. The default MFT zone is calculated and reserved by the system when it mounts the volume, and is based on volume size. You can increase the MFT zone by means of the registry entry detailed in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 174619, but you cannot make the default MFT zone smaller than what is calculated. Increasing the MFT zone does not decrease the disk space that users can use for data files. No, I don’t make them. But for less than a tenner, I’ll tell you how to. I’ll also tell you how you should use it. If the first MFT record is corrupted, NTFS reads the second record to find the MFT mirror file, whose first record is identical to the first record of the MFT. The locations of the data segments for both the MFT and MFT mirror file are recorded in the boot sector.
