About this deal

There is also the option which is set-up through the software to enable encryption. This is 256-bit AES hardware encryption.

The My Book Duo can be used with either Mac or PC systems but it needs to be formatted in the correct file system for that system before use. Connection to your computer is via USB Type-C, and cables come for both this standard and to convert a conventional USB 3.0 port to the Type-C variety if you haven’t embraced that newish connector yet. While it’s still a ‘My Book’ product, the new hardware looks much more like what it truly is; a tiny desktop server. And, by providing a solution where the drives are accessible, your storage solution can be repaired if a drive fails, or be upgraded to larger capacity storage when you need that. Having massive amounts of storage capacity attached to your system isn’t much use if it’s slow to access.

Chance of failure: lower. If the normal chance of failure of one drive is 1%, then the chance of failure with RAID-1 is 0.01%.The other drive was an old My Book Duo connected through USB 2.0/3.0, so it has much slower transfer speeds and connects through my Kingston Nucleum hub. When you pry the top of the My Book Duo, you can see that it uses standard 3.5-inch hard drives that you can easily replace. It includes two WD Red hard drive, which are used for NAS drives. In the future, if I need more storage, I can just replace the hard drives instead of buying an entire external hard drive. It’s more economical and better for the environment. UPDATE: According to Western Digital, the compatible drives are WD Green and WD Red. They do not say that it is compatible with other drives. If you have the Duo on the desk, the continuous rumbles and clunks can soon become annoying. WD need to consider that they are desktop devices and, therefore, need soundproofing added to make them less intrusive in quiet working environments. Incidentally, you can also set the unit to JBOD (which stands for ‘just a bunch of drives’), where each drive becomes a single volume/logical drive. We’re not sure why you might want to go this route, as it offers no redundancy against drive failure (like mirroring) or performance benefits (striping). But anyway, the option is there. The drive looks like any other external drive but inside features two hard drives and hardware RAID. These two drives can be configured to either appear as one large 12TB drive or a 6TB mirror.
