Ian Chilvers and Harold Osborne (Eds.), The Oxford Dictionary of Art Oxford University Press, 1997 (second edition), p. 273, ISBN 0-19-860084-4 "The central theme of his work is the loneliness of city life, generally expressed through one or two figures in a spare setting - his best-known work, Nighthawks, has an unusually large 'cast' with four." Prominent Santa Rosa murals to be demolished". Santa Rosa Press Democrat. January 16, 2019 . Retrieved July 9, 2020. Hopper was inspired by 'Café Terrace at Night' by Vincent van Gogh, which was exhibited in January 1942 in New York which Hopper no doubt would have seen.

New York City, Wildenstein, Loan Exhibition of Seventy Twentieth Century American Paintings, Feb. 21–Mar. 22, 1952, cat. 54. The panels at the same temperature will radiate the same amount of energy. If they didn’t, facing two in a closed system would cause one to get warmer than the other, until there was a balance. If that were to occur, that free temperature differential could be used to run a heat engine for free energy. And Now for Something Completely Different". O Gauge Railroading On-Line Forum . Retrieved September 18, 2015. In Hopper’s Nighthawks painting we see a diner with four people inside, on what appears to be a street corner. There are three men and one woman, of which Hopper and his wife Jo were the main models. Surrounding the diner are other apartment buildings reminiscent of a street in New York City. The scene takes place during the night with no other sign of life other than the four figures inside. Hopper certainly received artistic recognition and acclaim during the 1930s all the way to the 1960s from the years of struggle and seemingly uneventful artistic career. He continued to create paintings with the characteristic theme of solitary figures amidst various urban landscapes, often with an open-ended narrative, leaving it up to us, his viewers, to determine the outcome of his painted characters.

Jo Hopper, in a letter to Marion Hopper, January 22, 1942. Quoted in Gail Levin, Edward Hopper: An Intimate Biography. New York: Rizzoli, 2007, p. 349. It provides a tough, durable protective finish on metal, glass fibre or rigid plastic panels and the advanced acrylic based formulation, which is compatible with virtually all types of automotive paint finishes, including cellulose. The eery scene has captured the imagination of viewers, sparking intriguing and mystery around the unidentifiable figures who all seem to not know each other. The figures are modelled on Hopper himself and his wife Jo. The cinematic drama of the scene with the three strangers up late at night is created by Hopper’s intense use composition and light, which are common to his other works including ‘Chop Suey’. Hopper also succeeds in keeping the narrative on the scene open-ended. From Jo’s notes about the painting, the ‘Nighthawks’ title refers to the seated man with the beak-like nose next to the woman. “Ed has just finished a very fine picture--a lunch counter at night with 3 figures. Night Hawks would be a fine name for it. E. posed for the two men in a mirror and I for the girl. He was about a month and a half working on it.” Jonathan Miller's 1982 production of Verdi's opera Rigoletto for English National Opera, set in 1950s New York, features one street setting with a bar inspired by the Nighthawks diner. right-hand edge of the rear window, which reflects a vertical yellow band of interior wall, but fainter reflections can also be made out, in the counter-top, of three of the diner's occupants. None of these reflections would be visible
