Worrall slaagt er voortreffelijk in om de drie plots te verweven tot een ingenieus spionageverhaal. Hij springt tussen verschillende tijdzones en personages. Door stukje bij beetje prijs te geven van het verleden van elk personage begrijp je dat oorlog zo verschillend kan impacteren.
Russische Joelia en Britse Michael leren elkaar kennen tijdens een schaaktornooi. Aantrekkingskracht door verliefdheid, onbewust (on)wetend over elkaars wereld.

I am Lithuanian. I grew up with the stories about partisans. I watched the documentaries and fictional movies about that part of the history. As a rule, they're written and produced locally and they always have a tragic ending. The real history was brutally tragic.

En waarom vertelt Greta haar verhaal in 2004 maar is de epiloog gesitueerd in 1966? Verwarring alom.

Lingering notes: I read this during the first few days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine with the obvious undertones of USSR reunification. As The Partisan is somewhat centred on the issue of the Soviets' 'mistreatment' of Lithuanians and also one person's mission to right the wrong of war crimes, I couldn't help thinking that these two plot lines would've been better told in separate books. Each story would've made an excellent read on its own. Combining them seemed contrived and unnecessarily complicated this one story. I still highly recommend it though.If you're a fan of Len Deighton and John le Carre then this nerve-jangling thriller is for you...The characters are skilfully drawn and complex threads masterfully combined into a gripping read Yours
