Employability platform A Bar is a metal item that has been refined from ore, but which has not yet been made into an item such as a weapon or a piece of armour. Ores can be mined from mines found in various places around Gielinor. Then, the ore can be smelted into bars through the Smithing skill and can then be smithed into various items, mainly weapons and armour, through the Smithing skill. As the metal used in smithing require higher grade metals the more efficient and powerful the item will be. Most barristers' chambers ('sets') recruit pupils a year in advance. Recruitment in 2022/23 is mostly for pupillages starting in September 2024. Some chambers recruit just a few months (or even weeks!) in advance. A tiny number recruit two years ahead of time too. Bar courses offer one immediate positive for students – generally lower fees than the old BPTC system. NTU would only coverthe cost of one successful test (not any unsuccessful sits), taken between 1 October 2023 - 31 July 2024, and the reimbursement would be paid after you have fully enrolled on the course.

Three-step pathway - academic component, followed by vocational, followed by pupillage or work-based component. All applications for Bar courses need to be made directly to the course provider. If you plan to complete the vocational component immediately after your degree or law conversion course, you need to apply in the autumn of your final year or the first term of your conversion course respectively. Cost - Fees vary between courses and if you're funding it yourself this is something you need to think about. You may also want to consider the Inn of Court scholarships, as well as whether the provider itself offers any scholarships, to help you out. Do you enjoy debating and mooting? Are you a good debater? Are you good at using advocacy skills? Are you well-organised and a good independent worker? Do you love the finer points of law or the cut and thrust of head-to-head confrontation? If the answer to all these questions is 'yes', then the Bar might be the right career path for you. Regional providers may be the best option for those looking for pupillage on the regional circuits, not least because of their stronger links and networking opportunities with the local Bar. London students benefit from proximity to the Inns of Court and easier access to London sets for pupillage interviews. However, compulsory dining and advocacy training courses in the Inns enable regional students to maintain their links with the capital’s beating legal heart.
