About this deal

Create a routine that works for you and your family! It can evolve over time, so don’t worry if it’s not exactly what you want it to be right away. Having a routine helps take away anxiety around the unknown, and establishes what to expect during the situation. I needed to find a toothbrush that I could somehow use! The toothbrush had to be without those nylon bristles that I can’t stand in my mouth, but also strong enough so that I could get a very satisfying floss.

A sensory brush, or therapy brush, is used as part of the Wilbarger brushing protocol, something that an occupational therapist, trained in sensory integration techniques, may prescribe as part of a home sensory program for your child. These toothbrushes have a different design from normal ones. For one, the bristles are much thinner measuring just 0.018mm across the tip. These toothbrushing tips are interventions for making brushing teeth easier, or strategies for helping with sensory challenges that impact tooth brushing. Apply firm consistent pressure – light pressure will disorganize the system or cause increased arousal|ARK's Z-Brush™ vibrating sensory toothbrush combines our Z-Grabber® handle with our Brush Tips for sensory oral care stimulation. The softer (blue) Brush Tip has pliable bristles, which allow for gentle gum massage and teeth cleaning. The harder (yellow) Brush Tip can be used as a transition to the eventual use of a regular toothbrush. Both tips of the vibrating toothbrush provide tactile and proprioceptive input to the tongue, cheeks, palate, and lips. The Z-Brush™ can always be used in the off position without vibration. Or, it can be turned on for additional sensory input with its smooth, gentle vibrations. Vibration provides a new level of sensory awareness that many individuals find calming and soothing. The Z-Brush™ is sold with 1 Hard Brush Tip, 1 Soft BrushTip, and 1 Switch Tip. Turn the unit on by twisting the Switch Tip in *just* until it starts to vibrate (please do not overtighten!).Other tips sold separately. Battery included (this is a special Vibe Battery not sold in stores - we recommend buying a spare from the pull-down menu above). For those who are sensitive to touch, using a specialized hairbrush for autism may provide a more comfortable experience for both parent and child. The concept of hair brushing should be approached by someone with an understanding of the individual’s limitations and how they feel about sensations associated with hair brushing, as autism can make common experiences uncomfortable. With time and practice, hair brushing can become a pleasant experience for everyone involved. LEARN MORE HERE Here For All Your Needs They also come in various sizes and shapes depending on your child’s age and size. How do Autistic Toothbrushes work? Using an Autistic toothbrush for kids is much like using manual toothbrushes in most cases, but it does depend on the toothbrush of choice and, more importantly, the individual needs of the child. Some tips on how to use an autistic toothbrush may include: Sensory brushing can do several things, and depending on the individual and their sensory preferences or sensory needs, there can be different results following use of a sensory brush.

A sensory brush or brushing program is often indicated for pediatric clients that have sensory dysfunction such as tactile sensitivity, hyperactivity, or general sensory dysregulation. Kids with SPD may have higher than usual oral sensitivity. They display what’s known as Oral Sensory Defensiveness. Sensory brushing is a layperson’s term for the Wilbarger Deep Pressure and Proprioceptive Technique (DPPT) & Oral Tactile Technique (OTT).

When is The Best Time to Use Sensory Brushing?

The U-Shaped Sonic Toothbrush has soft silicone bristles in a U shape that help stimulate the gums and teeth. Vibrating brushes like these are also designed to help children with Autism who have trouble controlling their movements when using manual toothbrushes. The vibrating action of the brush helps with plaque removal on tooth surfaces and prevents gum disease. Outer brush heads / wings can be bent and repositioned (preferably by the dentist) for improved access, including adjusting the width or spread. Your child may also have sensory issues beyond their mouth. They might be reacting to the bathroom environment; perhaps the colours or just the general feel. People with SPD tend to be overly sensitive to particular stimuli like touch, sound or certain tastes.

The DuPont Tynex bristles are extra-soft, making the toothbrush ideal for kids with sensitive gums. What we like about it: Most of the tips above for kids also apply to adults: switch to a softer or silicon toothbrush, try a different flavour of toothpaste and see if warm water feels better. The toothbrush uses a light-timer to make sure kids brush for the recommended two minutes. The bright flashing light will activate when you press the button and switch off automatically after two minutes. You don’t have to worry about replacing the batteries – they are non-replaceable anyway. They are meant to last the same time as the toothbrush; three months. I cannot tolerate that mossy plaque feeling you wake up with on your teeth in the morning. Regardless, it has taken me most of my early adult life to force myself to consistently brush my teeth. Spoon Tip - Great for feeding therapy and mealtimes, these attachments turn the Z-Vibe into a vibrating spoon! The smooth, gentle vibration can help "wake up" the mouth and decrease aversions. The textured version has bumps on the bottom of the spoon bowl to help stimulate the tongue and lower lip, and to help encourage the transition from puréed to more solid foods. The hard Spoon Tip is rigid, like a regular spoon. The soft Spoon Tip is flexible (still firm enough to hold food, but flexible enough to be gentle on the teeth if someone bites down on the spoon.
