Create a routine that works for you and your family! It can evolve over time, so don’t worry if it’s not exactly what you want it to be right away. Having a routine helps take away anxiety around the unknown, and establishes what to expect during the situation. I needed to find a toothbrush that I could somehow use! The toothbrush had to be without those nylon bristles that I can’t stand in my mouth, but also strong enough so that I could get a very satisfying floss.
A sensory brush, or therapy brush, is used as part of the Wilbarger brushing protocol, something that an occupational therapist, trained in sensory integration techniques, may prescribe as part of a home sensory program for your child. These toothbrushes have a different design from normal ones. For one, the bristles are much thinner measuring just 0.018mm across the tip. These toothbrushing tips are interventions for making brushing teeth easier, or strategies for helping with sensory challenges that impact tooth brushing. A sensory brush or brushing program is often indicated for pediatric clients that have sensory dysfunction such as tactile sensitivity, hyperactivity, or general sensory dysregulation. Kids with SPD may have higher than usual oral sensitivity. They display what’s known as Oral Sensory Defensiveness. Sensory brushing is a layperson’s term for the Wilbarger Deep Pressure and Proprioceptive Technique (DPPT) & Oral Tactile Technique (OTT).
When is The Best Time to Use Sensory Brushing?
