About this deal

Paul Bramhall on Slaughter in San Francisco | Blu-ray (88 Films) We have a polishing face off between Eureka and 88 Films right now....in Eure… Oddly I feel like this movie pairs really well with Karate Kid III. This film also makes me realize how utterly lame The Next Karate Kid was, swap Mako with Mr. Miyagi and you could make a very similar movie. This is also by far Jonathan Brandis's best film, his acting in this is never cheesy, just totally natural and believable, he's obviously more attractive than a typical nerd but he really sells the invalide weakling character in his acting.

We have two choices here. I can describe the rest of the plot. Or you can decide for yourself if Barry becomes a junior karate master and defeats the class bully in the big match at the end of the movie. If I supply additional information, such as that*Joe Piscopo*plays the brutal, psychotic head of a local karate school, or that Barry has a crush on a girl in his class, you might be able to intuit additional developments. I’m used to watching this on VHS, but I think we can all agree that the new scan is a revelation based on the trailer.

The Wandering Earth II

When this movie came out, I was in that 11 to 14 group that Mr. Ebert mentions, and while I had seen all of the Karate Kid movies prior, I still enjoyed this one quite a bit. And it felt different enough from them to stand on it's own to me. While I can appreciate Mr. Ebert's criticisms, and agree with his general assessment of the clichéd main storyline, there is something else at work here that I think lifts this movie above that. While Barry's asthma and social awkwardness makes him sympathetic, his daydreams and fantasies becomie so real, that they feel like reality. And because of all the hardship he endures in his daily life, this type of escape is completely understandable and justified.

some interest in pursuing the darker corners of the boy's psychological state. It would certainly make for a more interesting picture, but the director himself a referee at times, juggling demands from all sides. Weiser also offers his experiences on the sound side of production, building a successful confidence through martial arts, also preparing him for a showdown with Randy (John Buchanan), a bully who belongs to the villainous Stone Karate Lee defending his Chinese restaurant from an invading biker gang (what?).
