Azaleas require about one inch of water per week, so if your rainfall levels are on the low end of the scale, plants will need supplemental irrigation. The seeds typically germinate in two to six weeks. Thin them out and space them out at least two inches apart. If plunging in soil, place some coarse, gritty material at the base to discourage worms from entering the pot through drainage holes. A cool, partially shaded position is desirable, but in deep shade flower buds may not form.

Native Trees – Plant deliveries are to Melbourne metro area only. Largely native to Australia, Eucalyptus are yet another example of plant species that is both beautiful in the residental landscape, and practical in the commercial one. Fast growing, with short, fine fibres in the wood make it suitable for fine-grade paper, as well as tissue paper and high quality coated papers. Eucalyptus oil is sought after as an industrial solvent, antiseptic, deodoriser, a natural insect repellant, and in small amounts as a food supplements. The wood is used in the crafting of musical instruments, most notably the Didgeridoo, and most of the rest of any Eucalyptus tree can be used in the making of dyes. All of this is, of course, in addition to the beauty of the foliage and the flowers that make Eucalyptus one of the most recognizable trees in Australia. Azalea 'Rosebud' – a dwarf, evergreen azalea, bearing masses of double pink flowers, over small, mid-green leaves. Before transplanting, water the plant thoroughly – it’s very difficult for a dry root ball to absorb moisture once it’s in the ground.Azaleas are flowering shrubs in the genus Rhododendron, used to refer to generally smaller-growing evergreen and deciduous varieties with smaller leaves. Azaleas are acid-loving plants producing long-lasting spring flowers which clothe the entire bush, available in a wide variety of colours. They are easy to grow and shade tolerant, making them perfect for growing under the canopies of trees or adding instant impact and colour to drab parts of the garden. Generally slow growing, Azaleas are effective when grown standalone or in mass plantings in larger areas. Trim after flowing to encourage a bushy growth habit. See our Rhododendrons category for generally larger varieties with sizable, leathery evergreen leaves. Hardwood – We only sell products made from Forest Stewardship Council approved timber. The following products are made from a hardwood called Shorea. It is extremely hard wearing and is also used to make boats. We recommend oiling all timber furniture to maintain longeivity, especially if it is kept out in the full sun. As for diseases, powdery mildew, caused by Erysipe azaleae, and petal blight ( Ovulinia azaleae) are common fungal problems that can generally be controlled with a fungicide.

In spring, right after flowering, collect cuttings five to six inches in length taken from stem tips. Choose stems of one-year old wood that’s semi-flexible – they should bend without snapping. Evergreen azaleas are easy to root as softwood new growth cuttings in June when the new growth has not hardened off and is still soft and bendy. These should be rooted with bottom heat and potted on the following spring. Evergreen azaleas seldom set much, if any, seed. Rhododendron luteum - also known as Azalea pontica, this is a bushy, upright shrub with fragrant yellow flowers and good autumn colour. It can be toxic to people and animals but is good for bees that love the nectar rich flowers.

Popular Varieties of Azalea Grown in the UK

Evergreens are the easiest to propagate from cuttings, while deciduous varieties typically give the best results when layered. From Stem Cuttings

Azaleas are among the most popular flowering shrubs in the world, and are a feature of many spring gardens. There are thousands of varieties and most of them do well when grown in pots. However, when planted in the garden some azalea varieties are much better than others. The best tall growing varieties with single flowers include ‘Alba Magna’ (large white), ‘Alphonse Anderson’ (light pink, edged white, rosy blotch in throat) ‘Magnifica’ (purple) and ‘Splendens’ (salmon pink with magenta spots). There is also a sport of Alphonse Anderson called ‘Kalimna Pearl’, which has soft lavender pink double flowers.

Extra Value Plugs

Deciduous – Deciduous azaleas lose their leaves in fall. They include species native to North America, Europe, and Asia. Flowers are usually tubular.
