Born in Sumatra, loved watching surfers rip it up at Paradise South Sumatra Surf Camp as a young grom. Became the Big Wave Guru of Bangkulu at Pantai Panjang in his early teenage years. Moved to Hatteras, North Carolina, for his high school years where he perfected his “Flying High Wire” act on the Outer Banks. Had some harrowing wipeouts in the aftermath of Hurricane Isabel. Undaunted, he’s been on a World Surfin’ Safari ever since. Spends his winters in Cocoa Beach, loves using what he learned at Paradise South to inspire and teach grommets how to bust out their very own Big Air Space Coast moves! This wound up being a fateful decision, as Rincon Rex and his Super Cool Pet cat, Santa Cruz, surfed their way to safety during the great Ice Age. As the only survivors of the Ice Age, Rincon Rex took it upon himself to teach the first humans how to surf. Rincon Rex knew how fun surfing was at the time, but he never could have guessed just how popular it would become around the world. Nowadays, Rincon Rex still finds his short arms an obstacle to paddling out, and Santa Cruz — perfectly content to sit and find the warm spots on their surfboard — is not much help. Rincon Rex was excited about the debut of Olympic surfing in Japan in 2020, and he looks forward to watching these events every four years. When you’re millions of years old, four years isn’t too long of a wait! I encountered some unique problems during the design process of Surfer Dudes. The curvature of the board needed to be precise, or the nose would catch the water and flip the Dude over every time. There was also the issue of balance. Having a standard surfboard fin on the bottom of the Surfer Dude board was not enough to keep the toy upright, so I had to invent a new twist on an old design. My patented new beach toy is fun for the whole family, but most importantly, it’s safe.
