Tobacco absolute is used not only in the tobacco-themed fragrances, for in small quantities it adds depth and character to aldehydic frgrances and imparts some typical dryness to fougeres and oriental compositions. Tobacco notes combine well with sandalwood, castoreum, labdanum, sage, vetiver, cedar and violet-iris.

Coumarin gives tobacco a somewhat sweet hay note (together with benzaldehyde, coumarin creates the very recognizable almond-cherry accord), while macrolactones, mostly pentadecanolide, impart the rather easily perceptible musky tone. Among odorants that shape the scent of tobacco we even find ambroxan and some similar compounds: they impart the amber accord with all its multiple facets to the tobacco scent.
