This is a review of the deluxe retail version of the core game – The Witcher: Old World. Designed by Łukasz Woźniak, graphic design by Dawid Bartłomiejczyk and Michał Długaj, miniature design by Tomasz Kalisz and Robert Kurek and published by Go on Board. It is based on the popular “The Witcher” book series by Andrzej Sapkowski and the subsequent video game adaptations. The game is designed for 1 to 5 players and is recommended for ages 14 and above. In The Witcher: Old World, players take on the roles of Witchers, embarking on dangerous quests, battling monsters, and navigating the morally ambiguous world of the Continent. It takes place hundreds of years before the events from the saga (and a certain Geralt of Rivia rose to fame). Components Leading the way is the first character set that contains three particularly iconic characters. You have Geralt Of Rivia, Yennefer and Dandelion. All of these miniatures that you're going to be seeing here are in plastic and come in around that 28/32mm scale. So, they should line up well with lots of other ranges. In this competitive adventure board game, 2-5 players travel across a vast map, embarking on masterfully penned quests, encountering and making ambiguous moral choices, fighting monsters — and sometimes brawling with other witchers to defend their school's honor! During each turn, players can perform various actions, in three specific phases. The board itself is split into three segments that correspond to these phases. In Phase One, you have the option to travel to different locations (playing a card from your hand or paying gold), triggering a unique action at the location you have moved to (this can involve levelling up a skill, gaining a potion, playing poker and more). In Phase Two, you must choose to either fight a monster or another Witcher at your location (more on that in a bit), meditate (if you have attained a high enough level) or chose a unique event card that presents you with an A/B choice. The difference between the Standard and Deluxe versions of The Witcher: Old World is the inclusion of 28 miniatures to replace the tokens in the standard edition. Both editions include miniatures for each Witcher school. The Witcher: Old World plays on a map with locations that fans of the franchise will find very familiar. It is worth pointing out that the miniatures in this game are excellent. Both in terms of the sculpts and their detail. I especially liked the sculpted bases and dynamic poses of the various Witchers. Gameplay By all accounts, these miniatures are exceptionally good quality. I've seen a few images of the actual plastic miniatures and the details seem to be very crisp indeed. The last of the sets turns things into a little bit of a boss encounter. You have two Ghouls and then the Grave Hag that you could use as the focal point of a scenario. The first player to acquire 4-6 trophies, with the number being set at the start of play, wins the game instantly. You can obtain trophies by killing monsters, instigating and winning chaotic tavern brawls against another witcher, training attributes to their highest level, and resolving certain quests throughout their adventure.
