Berenilde – Thorn’s aunt, she is a calculating and ambitious woman who seeks to manipulate Ophelia to further her own agenda. In 2013, she won the Gallimard-RTL-Télérama prize for first youth novel, for A Winter's Promise, the first volume of her Mirror Visitor quartet. [3] The title of the series ( La Passe-miroir in French) is inspired by Le Passe-muraille, a literary work by the French writer Marcel Aymé. [4] At first she found the writing to be an escape, then found that it was helping her to reconstruct herself. As she kept going, she discovered her ‘second nature’. She also joined an online author community called Silver Plume that gave her encouragement. They were so supportive that she decided to take up her first challenge in literature, to enter a contest for youth novels written for the first time and did quite well! Tante Rosamonde – Ophelia’s aunt, she is a sweet and caring woman who provides a sense of stability and comfort to Ophelia throughout the book.

Yes, you read that right. I loved her scarf, which is alive and has a mind of it’s own. I wanted to read that story, about Ophelia and her scarf! About Ophélie (she’s 19, as mentioned in the book), she’s introvert and shy, yes, but she’s not weak. She’s strong, stoic and independent in her own way and that’s more highlighted in book two. She is someone that is blessed with the singular gift of reading objects and finding out their past. Not only that, but she is able to do something even more fantastic and cross mirrors. The world was once a place of unity, but now there are a variety of different worlds that now exist and live separated from each other. Each of them is looked over by an immortal and omnipotent ancestor. Plain-spoken, headstrong Ophelia cares little about appearances. Her ability to read the past of objects is unmatched in all of Anima and, what’s more, she possesses the ability to travel through mirrors, a skill passed down to her from previous generations. Her idyllic life is disrupted, however, when she is promised in marriage to Thorn, a taciturn and influential member of a distant clan. Ophelia must leave all she knows behind and follow her fiancé to Citaceleste, the capital of a cold, icy ark known as the Pole, where danger lurks around every corner and nobody can be trusted. There, in the presence of her inscrutable future husband, Ophelia slowly realizes that she is a pawn in a political game that will have far-reaching ramifications not only for her but for her entire world. A Winter's Promise" is the very first volume of the Mirror Visitor Quartet, showcasing the moment when Ophelia's world is turned upside down. It's tough not to say more without spoiling anything, so I won't. I read the novel in a couple of sittings, even if there wasn't as much action (so far) as I thought there would be. We do spend, however, a lot of time in Ophelia's shoes, observing, discovering and appreciating a world building of staggering beauty. If you like stories with imaginary worlds, singular architecture and flamboyant characters, this is for you. This full color reading text is perfect for a variety of ages as the material will grab the attention of both younger and older students.

It is peaceful and has everything that someone like Ophelia could ever want. But everything that she has become so used to gets disrupted when something unexpected happens that she never saw coming. One day she is confronted with the fact that she must marry Thorn, the accountant of an entirely different ark, known everywhere for his cool, logical and dismissive manner. Ophelia must leave the only home she has ever known and go to Citaceleste. A cold ark, where there is always snow and the northern lights dance in the sky during the eternal night. But Thorn soon makes it clear that Ophelia's presence is not welcome. For Thorn's clan is notorious for its powers. With their claws, the members can inflict pain on others without even touching them. Soon Ophelia finds herself in the midst of intrigue and surrounded by people with different skills and must decide - who is friend and who is foe? Anima is a lovely place and just like her, the people that live there are able to read objects and discover their past. Her mirror traveler status means that she has channeled the ability that has gone through the generations and now has come to her. Once she arrives, Ophelia finds that the man she is supposed to be marrying doesn’t really seem to have an interest in getting to know her. He seems indifferent and she is confused by his emotional stance as she thought this was about getting married. It appears that he doesn’t really care about her, and Ophelia slowly starts to realize that she may have been brought to this place for another reason entirely.

I do understand a character giving such bad pre-marital advice in a book aimed at adults who can better process the setting, the horrid characters’ actions, and stuff like that, but not for a book aimed at a younger audience.
