About this deal

LL: How long have you been clean? And by the way, it’s okay if you don’t want to answer this! I don’t know if it goes against the “one day at a time” mentality, and it might not be something you share publicly. We're an online publication set out to entertain, educate and engage writers and readers of creative nonfiction. We also have a books division and bring our mission to life with an annual writing conference. AM: Airy-fairy means even though I believe in a Higher Power I’m not suffering from delusions of grandeur or anything. I’ve not got my head in the clouds or suffer from being a fantasist about it. I hope that makes sense. I just believe something greater is at work, guiding and protecting me. The book covers topics that are not spoken about enough, in a way that highlights that addiction can happen to anyone. Trauma can happen to anyone. Not only that, it’s possible to turn your life around and use your experiences to help others!

Candidate for Northern Ireland Assembly elections in 1983. When I moved to Monaghan Town 1980, J.B. O'Hagan was sharing a house on Ballybay Road with Sinn Fein/PIRA member, Joe Campbell from Tyrone, Joe Campbell was one of the people who took over house in Caledon in 1968 from which Civil Rights Campaign begun. Euphoric Recall" is truly one of the most frank, inspiring, harrowing (at points), insightful, truthful and brave books I have ever had the privilege of reading. Aidan lays bare his soul unashamedly to allow us, the reader into some of the most personal, dangerous and intimate moments that have not only shaped his own character and the lessons he learned personally but has also connected with his readers on a deep level which has provided the opportunity for Euphoric Recall to reach and relate to many, many people, a feat in which I find very few can achieve. In my own case there were many instances of which very profound.remains undiscovered in the Moors of north Monaghan. The kidnapping, torture, murder and secret burial of Columba, identical to the crimes committed by Myra Hindley and Ian Brady in England in the 1960s. Many of us write with a certain reader in mind. Were you writing for the reluctant addict? Society as a whole? I am stunned. An emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. So brilliantly written and brutally honest. True to the publisher’s name as it takes true guts to not only face what happened but to write about it and publish it - baring your soul to the world for all to see. LL: Many of our readers are writers themselves and are curious about writers’ publishing journeys. How long did it take you to find a publisher? Were they the first place you queried?

To this day there isn’t a lot of support in the community for addicts which is something I want to use my degrees to change. Both Aidan and Martin's sets were extremely well received by all who attended, including local residents, organisations and charities and sparked lots of conversations about local communities, people and stories. Aiden, who graduated from the college a number of years ago, read from his widely acclaimed book ‘Euphoric Recall’ and described his personal experience of addiction. His mum, Shirley, shared her personal reflections on living through that time. Aidan’s relatable journey, so far, through a life which puts hardships into perspective is profoundly moving.

Hard hitting memoir. Aiden Martin gives us the realism of poor schooling, abuse, heartbreak, addiction and recovery. AM: My advice would be to make sure you have good support in your life. Good people around you who will be honest if they think that revisiting certain things is potentially self-harming for you. For me writing about it helped. But depending on the person it could potentially be a trigger. So take advice from good people around you. But most of all trust in your own gut. That’s what I did. I knew I was ready. And not in a self-deluding way. I just knew it was time. What a truly remarkable, emotional and honest memoir. In my opinion, this was a powerful book with a spectacular and positive message that is achieved from a straight talking description of an honest account of how life can be, captured via some hard hitting accounts. They wanted ‘ballsy books about life’ and I told them from the beginning how ballsy my memoir was. But it was more than that—my editor, Julianne Ingles, was honest and thoughtful from the very beginning. The discussions felt personal and real. She told me what she expected from me and I told her my vision. It felt like a match. I was elated when I signed my contract with them. About the Author: Aidan Martin is a fiancé to his beautiful partner and a proud father of two beautiful children. He works as a mental health and addictions worker in Scotland as well as studying social work at the master’s degree level. In 2017 he gained an honours degree in social sciences: with criminology and sociology. As a grateful recovering addict, Aidan is heavily involved in the recovery scene. Aidan was born and raised in a housing scheme in Ladywell, within the town of Livingston.

The book and it's contents are a very rare mix of honesty, brutality, many forms of abuse, mental health crisis, suicide, addiction but also of insight, hope, positivity and the various stages of recovery. I hurt a lot of people by doing terrible things because of my addiction which I will always regret. I reported being raped to a member of The Provisional IRA and I was subject to a Kangaroo Court that was Chaired by JB O'Hagan, who was Provisional IRA Quarter Master (and other roles) and later a Sinn Fein candidate for the NI Assembly elections in 1983. The conclusion of the Kangaroo Court was that I was to remain silent and Michael Lynagh would be moved to Dublin. I read this book in 24 hours , i was absolutely gripped from the beginning. The author of this book is extremely talented with the way he describes thoughts and feelings relating to different events in his journey, you feel in that moment with him and expirence all the emotions together it is very easy to imagine, there is a mixture of happiness and sadness and proper out loud laughter! Real raw context within. I really look forward to following this journey! And also already jumping with excitement at the thought of another book! Thank you so much Aiden Martin you should be extremely proud! Aidan Martin from Livingston has struggled with substance abuse since he was just 13 years old and grew up with with 'no big dreams of success'.I have OCD - which can feel like an addiction at times - so I really related to Aidan’s story, and appreciated his heart-wrenching honesty throughout. A truly essential read for those interested in lived experiences—and not just statistics."— Darren 'Loki' McGarvey, author of Poverty Safari (Orwell Prize 2018). My book arrived, I began reading. I closed the book when it got late, yet could not sleep without knowing how it ends. I returned to my sitting room and finished the memoir. 4am had passed and I had work early, but I finished it!
