This is a low cost, Chinese radio, which I know operators have mixed opinions about. Again, this blog is about sharing my experience with equipment or techniques. I am obviously going to have some bias as equipment and techniques need to fit my use case. Below is my evaluation of the radio. FM Receiver Chip: The RDA5802N has a powerful low-IF digital audio processor. This makes it have optimum sound quality with varying reception conditions. The radio has the same advantages (good TX audio, good front-end, no rounding down errors when entering frequencies by hand), but there are some differences too.My advice to a novice is that if you aren’t completely committed to this hobby and prepared to put in extra patience to work out programming kinks, you will be saving quite a bit of money buying the BaoFeng GT-3TP. While the instruction manual isn’t great, it does provide enough information to get your radio set up and running with the basic functionalities. Because my sample came directly from Sainsonic’s head office, I think that this particular radio was originally intended for another region. BaoFeng radios were never known for their user-friendly and intuitive UI, but at a fraction of the cost of a Yaesu, it provides amazing value for the functionalities offered. If you aren’t in a rush to figure everything out all at once, you’ll save a ton of money by getting the Baofeng. Same issue with film ware have 3 different GT3 radios when uploaded from CHIRP one radio can not here anything on the other. gone into manually change to reset all on both radios seems to working ok but one radio have to plug external mic to communicate with the other 2 go figure. The Baofeng GT-3TP outputs only 2.9 watts on 2m but ups that to 4.5 watts on 70cm. That makes the Baofeng GT-3 dual band unique in my collection of handhelds. Overall, this radio comes at a great value. It’s a fully featured ham radio that sells at a very affordable price. It’s perfect for throwing in each bug-out-bag for members of the family. Unlike a super premium brand, you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars if you need to get a bunch of these radios. If you have older kids, they will probably enjoy learning the different features and you don’t have to stress over them being rough with these units.

Special Optimization: Optimized SQL settings and modulation of TX/RX power tubes to improve the quality and stability of the transmission. There are also 50 CTCSS/104 DCS to provide group calling convenience and reduce external interference. Overall, this radio isn’t difficult to use for experienced ham operators. The manual programming isn’t the most intuitive and some functions simply do not work as the instructions claim. This is all something that an experienced user who has dealt with CHIRP software can easily overcome. What I found really interesting with the Baofeng GT-3TP dual band was the transmit audio and signal quality. The transmit volume is about average and there is a little too much treble but unlike a lot of other radios it doesn’t tend to overdrive any part of the voice too much so your speech is pretty clear even at long ranges. Looking at the spectrum during transmitting the radio seems dead-on accurate and clean, both of which can be difficult to find in less expensive radios. As for use, the radio has a terrible front end and received interference like crazy. I had the local NOAA station as Channel 0 and the local Skywarn repeater (146.880) set as Channel 1. It wasn’t uncommon for me to receive on both Channel 0 and 1 at the same time, even though only one was selected and the second VFO was set to Channel 3. This would be a terrible radio for fox hunting or radio direction finding. If this is your main use, I would pass.
