About this deal

It’s not just wine bottle sizes that vary widely. There are numerous different shapes that wine is often bottled in as well. When wine was first bottled, bottles were not standard in shape or size. The reason for this is, at the time, all wine bottles were manufactured one bottle at a time by glass blowers. While Champagne bottles are obviously related to the pear shaped, Burgundy bottle, they are also different. Champagne bottles are usually slightly larger, heavier and feature larger, deeper punts for the reasons we mentioned. The bottles were invented at the same time that winemakers discovered how to produce Champagne, in 1662. It is to be expected with fine champagne that there is some variation from bottle to bottle — this is actually a good thing as it signifies artisanship — but when you’ve got multiple of the same bottle open and being passed around, you don’t want small pours of each here and there to amount to something in the glass that’s not quite true to taste. The same goes for temperature and carbonation. If a handful of bottles are open and some initially poured from more than others, the serving temps and effervescence will vary significantly. Magnums offer the opportunity for a bit more control over these factors. 4. Value & Impress As with many parts of the aesthetics of wine, nomenclature for wine bottles reconnects us to the structures of wine culture. Wine has long been a living part of our history and everyday lives, So it’s a clever connection to our past that bottle sizes are named after heroes from our oldest written documents. The Liter (or liter in Australia) wine bottle is the more popular size for Australian and European wines. Both the CIVC and the UMC deny the existence of the Melchior. The CIVC says ‘the Melchior was never used in Champagne. There is no record in the known archives.’ The OCW says the Melchior is 18 litres /24 bottles (the size of the Solomon, here), but does not specify this size for Champagne, so the 18 litre /24 bottle Melchior could yet be a correct size/name for a different region. But it’s clear there is no Melchior in Champagne. With 15L per bottle and equivalent to 20 standard bottles, the Nebuchadnezzar is the largest mainstream Champagne bottle available and is great for big meals or statements parties.A knowledge of it can go a long way towards developing Champagne vertu, aside from winning bar bets! Other resources, not cited here, have the Solomon variously at 20 litres /26.6 bottles, or 21 liters / 28 bottles, but I am inclined to choose the CIVC and the UMC opinion. Wine bottle sizes and names are surprisingly varied! The vast majority of wines come in the regular 75cl bottle size, but it’s well worth knowing all the different wine bottle sizes available. Whatever the reason, the size was standardised in the 1970s. There are some notable exceptions, such as Vin Jaune from Jura which is sold in 62cl bottles. Magnum, Jeroboam, etc: What are the other different wine bottle sizes?
