A mostly lighthearted tweaking of literary sensibilities, playwright Dunn’s first novel gets good mileage from a simple notion: People can carry hero worship way too far. Slips of the tongue. Slips of the pen. All over town people hesitate, stammer, fumble for ways to express themselves, gripgrasping about for linguistic concoctions to serve the simplest of purposes. What are the “ten salients” of the Council’s proclamation to the people of Nollop? [55] How does it justify its actions? What does the story about Nollop and his stenographer suggest about the founder’s character? [56]Why is Rory Cummels expelled from Nollop? [121-2] How does his offense differ from those of the other characters’ and what does it say about the metastasis of the Nollopian cult? The best way to enjoy Ella Minnow Pea is to read it closely, paying attention to its themes, patterns and linguistic tropes. Discuss the novel’s value as a means of teaching the art of critical reading. How would you apply the methods you used to read Ella Minnow Pea to approach other texts?

Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn Plot Summary | LitCharts

Cult of Personality: The High Island Council tries to establish one centered around Nevin Nollop. Given the rapid deterioration of the island's social structure and widespread hostility toward the Council at that point, they don't get much support. We slowly conclude that without language, without culture -- the two are inextricably bound -- existence itself is at stake. And we forget that the novel is only playful. Soon we see that a void, a blankness, awaits us." - Irving Malin, Review of Contemporary Fiction The story itself is farcical but told well, the use of letters as the narrative device largely keeps the pace up. There are one or two letters written by some characters such as Ella’s mother, which feel rather cumbersome and out of place but overall it works fantastically. Research a totalitarian regime of any historical era and compare its history to that of Nollop under the Council. You may wish to consider such phenomena as the religious or secular cult of personality; the gradual escalation of the assault on civil liberty; the politicization of culture and language; the use of informants; and the ways in which ordinary citizens come to internalize the repression of the regime.Perhaps we could imagine living without one letter, ‘z’ maybe, as being not so hard a task, but as the letters fall one after another and the island council become increasingly devoted to the apparently divine will of Nollop, going so far as to banish or execute citizens who use the banned letters, the predicament of Ella Minnow Pea, her friends, and her family becomes far more serious. Apocalypse How, Class 0: Regional societal collapse, brought on by the deportation of nearly everyone. Even after Enterprise 32 succeeds, it's unclear whether Nollop will have a working society again.
