About this deal

Another popular option is the Frangelico and chocolate. This drink can be made by combining Frangelico with chocolate syrup and milk over ice. Rum remains the third biggest spirits category in the world – and past editions of The Rum & Cachaça Masters have shown premium developments in the category. But what stood out in this year’s blind-tasting competition? This year’s award winners spanned multiple categories, from flavoured expressions to un-aged varieties

Matured in an eclectic mix of casks, this rum spent the first three years of its life in Bourbon casks, before moving to rioja barrels for six months, and then Islay whisky casks for a final three months. With smoky notes that break away to a medley of fruits and spices, this is a great sipping rum that slaps in an Old Fashioned. Method: Add ice to two highball glasses, then pour in the ginger beer. Top with the rum, then finish with a scoop of ginger ice cream and a grating of lime

Method: Combine the Belgrove Hazelnut Rum, Cointreau, mango pulp & lime juice in a shaker with ice, and shake for 10 seconds. Strain into a martini glass, garnish with a slice of mango and serve. Belgrove bagged a Master for its Hazelnut Rum, and for anyone who loves the indulgent flavours of Nutella and Ferrero Rocher, this tot is a must-have that happens to make for a perfectly indulgent Espresso Martini. Tasting notes for Depaz XO included “a rich Cognac-like nose” leading to a “floral, aromatically fruity palate with orange and grapefruit peel”, and it wasn’t long before the general consensus was to award it a coveted Master medal. If you’re looking to add a sipping rum to your collection, Rodriguez enthused that this expression was “absolutely beautiful.” Holyrood Distillery definitely delivered in the Dark Rum – Aged Over 13 Years flight, netting a Master medal for its Elizabeth Yard – Travellers Distillery – Ungrogged American Oak No 1 Char Octave. Smith liked this rum’s “light spiciness with just the right amount of sweetness”.

Aroma – “Initially you get the Caramel on the nose, but if you wait a couple of seconds the Hazelnut comes through.” Clairin is the name on every spirits-writer’s lips right now. It’s an ‘agricole’ style of rum – meaning it is made from sugar cane juice, rather than molasses – that’s produced exclusively in Haiti. Expect to find a really distinct, savoury, almost herbal/grassy character here, alongside notes of crisp green apple, pine, mint and roasted root vegetables. Alc 49.5% Method: Pour the rum, pineapple juice and coconut water into a large stein or tankard. Add a handful of ice and mix to combine. Top with the Einstök White Ale. Garnish with three pineapple leaves. The blind tasting was split between four groups of tasters due to the number of entries, with the first panel comprising: Bryan Rodriguez, wine and spirits buyer, Harvey Nichols; Sara Jane Eichler, founder of the Negroni Club UK; and Nicola Carruthers, deputy editor of The Spirits Business, who chaired the panel.

The dark rum category has grown substantially over the past 18 months. Retailers and bars are seeing a new breed of enthusiast looking to make rum their speciality, given its wide-reaching flavour profile. Choices range from more traditional Caribbean styles to a host of incredible, often innovative bottlings from diverse locations around the world. To assess the current standard of rums and cachaças on the market, we gathered a group of expert judges at the London City branch of Peruvian restaurant Coya. Method: Combine the Belgrove Hazelnut Rum, coconut cream, pineapple juice & lime juice in a shaker with ice, and shake for 10 seconds. Strain into a Collins glass filled with ice, and garnish with a wedge of fresh pineapple & pineapple leaves. Aroma – “The Cranberries and Pears have come together this Christmas Season to create a delightful aroma with the Cinnamon giving it a little sweeter touch.” One option is to mix it with other spirits. You can mix it with vodka, gin, or bourbon. Another option is to mix it with fruit juice or soda. You can mix it with orange juice, pineapple juice, or cranberry juice. You can also mix it with club soda or ginger ale.
