About this deal

For cold snowy days in the UK it works excellently as a single layer garment or with the addition of a thin baselayer and waterproof shell for rain. The singular layer of pertex breathes well and copes with sweat better than most traditional layering systems would be able to (this is because the sweat is drawn straight through the Dryactiv insulation on to the Pertex where it can evaporate from).

Montane Extreme Vs. Buffalo Alpine jacket - which one? Montane Extreme Vs. Buffalo Alpine jacket - which one?

If you do sweat out, the pile liner dries super fast anyway, but of course it’s uncomfortable and you’re losing fluid and electrolytes too, never a good call on a hard mountain day. The cuff area has been slimmed down too with quite a narrow opening, which means you can only fit gauntlets over the top of the cuff rather than underneath. Not generally an issue at low temperatures when snow rather than rain is the issue, but worth being aware of it you habitually wear cuffs over gloves. ProsThe Montane looked better, fit better had better features ( detachable hood, cordura on high wear areas etc) BUT… it fell apart. I too normally used to walk in wearing a base layer when using the montane. However I found that sometimes you needed a fleece and others a hard shell, by the time you have this lot in your bag there is not a lot of room for anything else.

Montane Extreme Jacket | Review - Outdoors Magic

Pile-Pertex is arguably the original non-wayerproof, but wear all day, single-layer soft shell system. The exterior Pertex shell is completely windproof and decently water resistant, while a deep pile lining adds effective insulation.I have a Montane extreme and its fantastic for winter outdoor work (not hard graft, but fiddly fettly jobs outside, standing about, bit of moving, carrying that sort of stuff). The cuffs overlay good gloves, the hood is well fitted and its a good length, in large, for my 5’10”. The venting is better than my old buffalo, but that’s years ago and I guess they’ve improved. I prefered the Buffalo hood, the montane one is way to big for the velcro on the collar so never really fitted right. Now with the hard shell system I use, I also don't walk in wearing the shell. I carry one standard weight fleece one very light fleece (as well as a base layer). That way my bag is fairly light and unbulky wrt the clothing in it and I have a good choice of clothes to wear during the day depending on the conditions. The Montane is a superb fit and better thought out than the Buff. The hood is very good and fits over a helmet. I was wetter than ever when walking on Thurs is snowy windy conditions, wearing merino wool and hardshell, just to test out the system. Buffalo never leaves me actually feeling damp and miserable, and is always warm. Plus I have a problem with overheating but the side zips work fine for me. Basically whatever you wear when precipitation is in the air, you will get wet. Its up to you how you decide to deal with it.

I also find that on windy days there is normally a lot of spin drift and constant bombarding with spindrift eventually makes the soft shell fail with me, then I end up damp and unhappy On non windy days if its dry then you really don't need a soft or hard shell and if its snowing then again I'd end up damp in a soft shell. So for me there were rarely conditions when having a soft shell was beneficial. Because the adjusters are small. Trying to adjust them whilst wearing heavy mitts is frustrating work. This is another design feature I’d change.

I own both, and i'm selling both! For me the Buff wasn't as warm as the montane. It was also a poorer fit with it lifting when i lift my arms etc. When you compare it side by side with the Montane, the Montane stands out as a quality product. OP - I've had both. The Montane has a few extra whistles and bells, but for me the Buffalo Big Face was a far better fit so worked better. I'd try to find both to try on and buy which ever fits the best (trim - you don't want excess space in it which my montane has). The cuffs have a snug fit which is perfect if you’re wearing mitts as they slide over the cuff with ease. Nothing more annoying than having your sleeves bunching up! Fully adjustable and removable pile lined helmet compatible mountain hood with three point adjustment and wired peak
