About this deal

Stability-wise, several features accommodate tread and steadiness, namely, the outsole’s relatively wide base (wide in comparison to its fit). Combined with the 5 mm lugs, both elements guarantee smoothe hiking on whatever trail you choose. Salomon shoes often run narrow, but the OUTward is a bit more generous and a great match for those with average feet.

OUTLINE PRISM GTX | Salomon

The expression light as a feather comes to mind when someone mentions the Salomon Outline GTX. Weighing 350 g for the men’s version and 290 g for the women’s, they help you increase speed and don't make your legs feel like they're lugging something around – as can sometimes be the case with heavy walking boots. If you're looking for a lightweight, sturdy walking shoe with lots of grip that still looks nice enough to wear around town, I can recommend the Salomon Outline GTX. Through performance driven design, Salomon delivers innovation and progression to mountain sports; converting new ideas into action and expanding the limits of possibility. Salomon’s heritage, culture, and commitment are tied together by one simple concept: the world’s leading mountain people creating the world’s leading mountain products. Salomon is headquartered in Annecy, France. These Salomon trainers are equipped with a High Traction Contagrip outsole. In case you're not familiar with the design, it leverages three factors to ensure the best grip possible: Density, Compound, and Geometry. We didn't experience any catastrophic failures during testing, but we do have a few features to flag. During our research, we noticed that some wearers complained about outsole separation from the upper. In addition, the tread on the heel wore down faster than people expected — typically after a couple of hundred miles.

In addition, the outsole of these Salomon trekking shoes is a mixture of multiple ingredients. The recipe provides the necessary compounds for diverse surfaces. At 1 pound 8.6 ounces for the Low GTX men’s version, the OUTline undercuts Salomon’s popular X Ultra 3 GTX (1 lb. 10.8 oz.) and XA Pro 3D V8 (1 lb. 10.1 oz.). For those who want to cut even more weight, Salomon’s X Raise GTX saves you 1 ounce for the pair, or you can go with a trail running shoe like the non-waterproof Altra Lone Peak 5 at 1 pound 6.2 ounces. And for a comparable hiking shoe with waterproofing, the Adidas Terrex Swift R2 GTX is the exact same weight as the OUTline. One concern we have is with the tongue. It is felt-lined, which means it isn't waterproof. Our guess is that this soft liner is there for comfort, but it results in a part of the shoe that stays wet for longer than the rest of it. Salomon hiking boots and walking shoes are the ultimate companions for hikers seeking unbeatable performance and comfort. Engineered with advanced features such as Gore-Tex technology, these boots offer waterproof protection while allowing your feet to breathe, ensuring you stay dry and comfortable throughout your outdoor adventures. Last but not least, the lugs, which are 5 mm in depth, present 27 different geometries to finish off the surface-gripping formula. No mud can ever hinder your pace since the lugs are well-spaced enough to let the mud come off on its own. While I love the Salomon hiking shoes I have, they're big boots and a little too warm for summer hikes, so when Salomon asked if I wanted to try the lighter Salomon Outline GTX shoes, I didn't say no. The model looks and fits like a sneaker more than a hiking shoe but does it also hold up on rough terrain? Of all hiking footwear brands, Salomon is at the top of the heap in terms of build quality—we’ve had very few issues with the brand to date. Out of the box, the Salomon OUTline Low GTX was noticeably light in its construction but seemed to be right in line with what we’ve come to expect. However, after our initial hike, we noticed that the low-profile rubber toe cap already had begun to peel away. On one shoe, it’s already separated, and simply pushing down on the toe of the other caused it to separate. In our opinion, that’s unacceptable and something that shouldn’t happen until way down the road when the rest of the shoe is starting to give out. No other part on the shoe indicates durability issues, but we sincerely hope that Salomon improves the connection point at the toe cap. The Outline GTX comes in two versions: The Salomon Outline Low GTX hiking shoes that I have (both available in waterproof and non-waterproof) and a mid-high version (waterproof only).

Salomon went classic with regular flat laces on the Outline GTX. This type of laces reduces discomfort for the instep, guaranteeing a comfortable fit. They're also durable and easy to tie. In general, Salomon shoes tend to run a bit narrow, and the OUTline is no exception. The shoe is on the snug end of the spectrum both in the middle of the foot and toe box, and does not come in wide sizes. If you have narrow feet, this shoe likely will fit you well, and those with regular feet should try them on beforehand to make a determination. In terms of sizing, the OUTline fits true. Our testers bought their regular sizes (9 and 12) and both were the correct length. Finally, we recommend wearing these shoes around town or at home before hitting the trail. Some lightweight hiking shoes manage to fit great out of the box, but we had some mild discomfort after putting in a decently long day right off the bat.
