When thinking about a city, many people often associate these areas with large geographical areas, towering skyscrapers, and busy streets filled with people and traffic. However, there are some cities around the world that defy this expectation by having relatively smaller populations. In fact, some cities are so small that they may seem more like towns or villages. Like many other East-coast cities on this list, Providence started life as one of the oldest European settlements in the United States. Its Puritan roots start in 1636 and the link between history and charm is palpable in many areas of the city, particularly the East Side near the Providence River, where you’ll find the Old State House (1762), the First Baptist Church in America (1638) and many other impressive old buildings, such as Fleur-de-lys Studio. Rhode Island School of Design’s Museum is well worth a visit for its excellent collection of fine art from around the world, including pieces from Andy Warhol, Monet and Picasso. You’ll also find the Ivy League’s Brown University in Providence. Or, there are lots of good hiding places in the city, like under a mulberry bush or up a walnut tree.

The eponymous waterfalls of Sioux Falls take center stage in South Dakota’s most populous city. Falls Park was built around them, providing a bucolic attraction at the heart of the city. The remains of Queen Bee Mill point to the region’s original importance as an agricultural center. Iona said the illustrations made her feel really sad and they were just right for the story. When she was told what the story was really about she was intrigued and really interested to find the ‘clues’. She was so happy when the ‘girl and her mother’ were re-united, as she thought. The small city is a gateway to an exceptional array of wild spaces, including Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Big Cypress Natural Preserve and Everglades National Park. If you’re looking for wildlife, you’re sure to see plenty along the various boardwalks of these conservation areas, including birds, alligators and other reptiles. I cannot be excited about a project unless I challenge myself to take risks and work outside my comfort zones. I tend to start a project open and free and build up rules as I go. Most of my challenges are about breaking those fake rules. Or setting my goals and expectations so high that although I may never reach them I still achieve far more than I could before. The fake rules I impose are usually about materials I use or the way I pace the story or external expectations. For the next book, I play around with materials I haven’t tried before and a style that is different than I am used to. Thank you, Sydney, for sharing your work and your process!
