About this deal

Though there were multiple timelines and character perspectives to follow, the narrative felt pretty smooth to me. The writing keeps you hooked. Me: Can you be more specific? What kind of witches? Scary/not scary? Who are your typical favorite authors? The Picture Company co-founders Andrew RonaandAlex Heinemanwill executive produce the series with Studiocanal’s Ron Halpern and Shana Eddy overseeing the production for the studio. In her deeply atmospheric new novel, Cooke weaves together multiple genres into an intriguing story about longing, lost love, and family….Cooke does an excellent job of bringing together three time periods and multiple story lines. Readers of Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wifeand students of Scottish history and myth will love this read.”– Booklist So did it evoke feelings of suspense, danger, fear and creeped me out with the supernatural elements to the story?.... Yes and no!!!

Goodreads The Ghost Woods by C.J. Cooke | Goodreads

But there is love in this story. The love of a mother for her children and the love of Luna, who will never give up looking for her two missing sisters. What happened in the past has colored Luna's life forever but she won't let go of her search for answers, no matter how the search affects her present. At no time is there a sense of ease or peace, as the curse, and all that it means, presses down on Luna and the island. I’ll admit, I felt better once she’d done that, and yet I usually wouldn’t have given heed to such things. Fear, combined with a touch of desperation, makes you much more open to buying into otherwise crazy practices (p. 177). Published in 2021 by Penguin Random House, the book follows young mother Liv and her three daughters who arrive on a mysterious Scottish island to run a decrepit lighthouse.

Yes. With strong female characters, many twists and turns and unique location this is one of my favourite books of the year and a perfect Halloween read.

The Lighthouse Witches – HarperCollins Publishers UK

Cooke fuses mystery with horror in this atmospheric thriller….[B]reathless pacing, evocative prose, and a hopeful denouement leave readers feeling gratified. Supernatural suspense fans will be well pleased.”– Publishers Weekly When single mother Liv is commissioned to paint a mural in a 100-year-old lighthouse on a remote Scottish island, it's an opportunity to start over with her three daughters - Luna, Sapphire, and Clover. When two of her daughters go missing, she's frantic. She learns that the cave beneath the lighthouse was once a prison for women accused of witchcraft. The locals warn her about wildlings, supernatural beings who mimic human children, created by witches for revenge. Liv is told wildlings are dangerous and must be killed. stars from me to this engrossing story. (It might have been 3.75 had I read the book. The bonus is for the narrators.) I LOVED this for Halloween! A mom (Liv) and her three daughters arrive on a remote Scottish island. She is commissioned to paint an old lighthouse. When they arrive the lighthouse is run down and there is history attached to it. The land was used to keep women accused of witchcraft and when the witches were murdered they cursed the island.Single mother Liv has been commissioned to paint a mural in the lighthouse of a remote Scottish island. Liv takes it as a golden opportunity to make a fresh start with her three daughters. She soon discovers that the island harbours dark secrets. But who in this modern day can believe in those old ladies tales and superstitions? Not Liv, for sure. Until things take a dark turn. Midway I questioned how dark it was going to go and whether I needed to grab a cushion to hide behind, but it made me use my imagination for the darker moments which may have made things worse. The tension grew towards an unexpected and satisfying conclusion. Would I recommend? High upon the cliffs of a remote Scottish island, there is a lighthouse that has weathered storms for centuries. This book is SO good! I was completely gripped with the story of Liv and her daughters Saffy, Luna and Clover. Multiple narrators and time frames, family dynamics, siblings, witches; eerie but not scary. I mean, what is there not to love? This is C.J. Cooke’s best yet!A fascinating and enthralling read’ Nina Pottell, Prima

The Lighthouse Witches by C.J. Cooke | Goodreads

So much has gone wrong for mother of three, Liv. She's run away to a remote Scottish island where she has a commission to paint a mural in an old lighthouse. The old house where she and her daughters will be staying is old, dark, and damp and the lighthouse is full of dank water and bats and is falling to pieces. The mural Liv is commissioned to paint is a line drawing of symbols and the person who commissioned the mural is somewhere on the sea. Little did Liv know that she would end up losing seven year old Clover and fifteen year old Saffy, and attempting the unthinkable with nine year old Luna. The move comes after The Picture Company and Studiocanal reupped their multi-year deal to make a number of films per year. Part of the deal sees the two companies move into TV – they are already working on a series adaptation of the Johnnie To action thriller Drug War, with Jett’s Sebastian Gutierrez attached.A secluded Scottish island with a century old lighthouse, is steeped in a past of women accused of witchcraft in the 17th Century. The women, held in an underground prison, were tortured and burned without trials. Before the burning, these brutalized women screamed a curse on the island and its people causing fear and superstition for centuries to come. Thank you so much to the publisher, Berkley Books, for providing me with a copy to read and review. The only boundary between desire and obsession is time: if you crave someone long enough, it becomes a need. It becomes your ever-waking thought. The only thing you live for." The island is not the idyllic place one would imagine, there is talk of witches being burned in a cave beneath the lighthouse, and murmurings of wildlings (supernatural beings who mimic human children) and though sceptical, Liv has to admit that there is definitely an air of menace, a feeling that something bad is about to happen.
