About this deal

This TV’s 4K image is crisp and clear, and thanks to this set’s Dolby Vision and HDR10 codecs the colors are bright and vivid. The middling brightness means the UK31 can't compete with higher-end sets, but you're getting a solid picture output for the price. Used to determine a user's inclusion in an experiment and the expiry of experiments a user has been included in. The blurring is not quite as bad as we drop down in resolution to watch an upscaled version of First Man in Full HD on Blu-ray. Colour handling is still consistent and dark details are certainly no worse than before. In fact, all things considered, this TV’s scaling chops are not bad at all. The sound also projects forward and sideways from the screen quite effectively, avoiding that feeling so often heard with built-in TV audio systems that sound only seems to exist behind the screen. We drop down further to some standard-def daytime TV with Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators. The blurring is still present and the detail is understandably wanting, but that’s what we’d expect at this price.

HDR is also handled well for a budget TV. The stark contrast between the shadows of the canyon and the harsh, sunlit areas are neither too overblown nor too dark and there’s enough texture to the stones on the slopes to add a reasonable sense of depth to the image. The TV comes with a large and sturdy remote that still feels lightweight to hold. The majority of the buttons feature a decent amount of travel, but the plastic arrow keys can be prone to fingerprints. The remote also features shortcuts to Prime Video, Netflix and Freeview Play. There’s also Alexa, built-in to the bezel of the TV, that can be used to navigate the TV or to ask questions and conjure up information, as you would with an Echo smart speaker. There is synchronisation with Google’s digital assistant through the ‘Ok Google’ ecosystem that connects a compatible product to the TV. With Alexa built-in you simply say her name and the TV’s microphones stand to attention. We test every televisions we review thoroughly over an extended period of time. We use industry standard tests to compare features properly. We’ll always tell you what we find. We never, ever, accept money to review a product.

Finally in the negative column, motion handling is only solid rather than great, even with the Tru Motion feature active. As long as there’s content to watch in Dolby Vision, that is. Netflix supports it and there are a few shows on Prime Video. If you have a Dolby Vision 4K player, the increase in performance and fidelity is welcome. Used to throttle request rate. Some Toshiba TVs support Bluetooth technology – please refer to the specification section of the model you are interested in.

Detail levels are quite high, and dialogue is never overwhelmed. The mid-range is quite open and expressive, and escalates decently well to meet the challenge of big action movie moments. In fact, the 50UK3163DB HDR image management provides it with so much brightness/light control headroom that it’s able to still make peak highlights of full-screen bright images stand proud of their already punchy surroundings, rather than the brightness just ‘flattening off’ as we might expect with a TV that has less than 500 nits to play with. So, for instance, you become impressively aware of the light gleaming off individual drops of rain during HDR footage of torrential rainfall, or of sunlight catching the corners and curves of car bodywork. But, if you can afford to splash out on a soundbar then you’ll be treated to a major boost in performance.
