About this deal

LIGHT TRANSMISSION - SCHOTT ED - glass with a hydrophobic multi-coating provides optical clarity and precision in all situations. A dangerous combination - but here is a great place to bump up one's knowledge (though at the risk of worsening your binocular addition) ... I could really go for the 8x50 if it had a wider field of view. It strikes me that Swarovski have an ideal platform for a long focal length 8x50 in their EL line with a wide field of view, but I suppose I shouldn't hold my breath! Did you actually measure it? Is it a GSO finder? It seems to me, my GSO RACI finder is about 5 degrees. Agena specs it a 5.4 degrees. While on vacation last month I had the opportunity to closely compare my 8x56 FL to a friend's Ultravid 8x50. I hadn't written about that experience here because I didn't consider either binocular to be of much interest to birders. Now your question gives me a good excuse, so I'll look for my notes and write a brief comparison this weekend. Sorry I haven't seen a Swarovski 8x56 SLC.

I have my finder fov set in SS5 and I recall that I couldn't quite get the edge fov stars in my finder to match up to what SS5 was showing me. So yeah, seems 5.4 degrees would be more accurate.I'm probably one of the few who uses the 8x56 FL for birding. It's just too large and heavy to attract much interest from birders. I wrote about it here last spring: I imagine a premium eyepiece adding some torque to the finder and being a bit concerning living there unattended during a session. But it also would give better views than simple eyepieces. I would feel comfortable leaving a Plossl in there all the time. With a 1.25" focuser, I can do either at a later date I suppose. The Opticron Discovery WPPC 50mm series waterproof roof prism binoculars are compact in design. They offer a stylish, fashionable, and user-friendly field glass with a variety of features, including a wide field eyepiece, close focus to 6ft, and a narrow field. Read Review

Also, has anyone seen Zeiss 8x56 FL test or review in english. I have searched the net but could not find anything interesting except marketing materials. Seems that 8x56 FL are not realy popular. I'm guessing the prisms they use to erect the image are also too small to support a wider field of view.

So, for a finder, 60 degrees is easily doable and cheap. It would help find stuff. But the finder is mounted. You are more likely to notice the edge astigmatism when you keep the scope still. Also, Erfles have less eye relief. Hand held, holding them against your face stabilizes them. Mounted, bumping the eyepiece shakes the view. Kelners have more eye relief, more even than Plossls for the same field of view. I measured the finder this weekend. Measured twice in different parts of the sky just to make sure.It measured 5 degrees. I still haven't made the 5 degree wire loops yet, but hope to sometime this week and give it a shot after that. The Leica Ultravid 50 HD-Plus models provide excellent contrast and outstanding image brightness that other binoculars with larger front-lens diameters can hardly rival. Fluoride lenses ensure optimum clarity and resolving power. Thanks to their large objective lens diameter, they are particularly suitable for use in twilight and the early evening hours.

When I was looking around for a scope which was to be used poorly for stalking then I was advised to get the 8 X 56 scope either by Swaro or S & B. As long as the adjustment screws are tight and the focuser setscrew is tight, I see no issues. I leave mine mounted and read for days.If I was looking at an 8x50 it would not be the Leica as its field of view is only 115m the same as the 10x50. I would go with the new Swarovski 8x50 EL. There is also a certain sense of history there. The Leica Trinovid largely first defined what continues today as the modern roof prism binocular, with internal focusing, full waterproofing, adjustable mechanical eyecups, and left/right eye adjustment integral with the focusing mechanism. It was also one of the first with prism phase correction coating, but sadly, Zeiss set that precedent a couple of years previous, you can't win em all I guess! I hope you enjoy yours. The 42mm and 50mm Trinovid BAs were replaced by their BN equivalents in 2000 (the 32mm versions were not replaced until 2001). The most effective ones have indeed been proven to work. Prior to purchasing things, do some research on best 8x50 binoculars. Here are some questions to consider.
