About this deal

Once the Artie Max was fully charged, my kids removed the USB-micro cable, slid the rear power button to the on position, and grabbed our iPad Pro 11”. We navigated to settings, to WiFi, and then chose Artie Max from the list. From there, we opened Safari and typed “local.ArtieMax.com.” With kids ages 3F, 6F, 10M, 12M, we started with the Artie Max UI and the Remote Control features. It’s simple stuff, but there’s obviously room to expand it almost endlessly and build up to very complex behaviors—all acted out in front of you by the endlessly charming Cozmo. Coding challenges are set with activity cards, or children can explore more open-ended play arranging the included tile pieces into unique mazes. For those kids who might be a little less analytical, there’s STEAM, which adds the Arts to STEM for more artistic creativity.

Learning Resources MagiCoders Coding Critters brings a creative, sensorial and magical perspective to coding and STEM. With a spell book you can cast spells on Blazer the Dragon or Skye the Unicorn and you can also design your own limitless coding challenges with the 22-piece pet playset (including a treasure chest, large ball, fireballs, a castle piece and many more). It’s great for teaching children spatial awareness, sequential logic and basic coding skills.

What I like

The STEM acronym has become the en vogue educational word over the past two decades. Schools and extracurricular activities have utilized this term to attract students and parents interested in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and technology. Even though the idea was not new, the acronym was changed from SMET to STEM in 2001 by Judith Ramaley, a biologist through the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).

Robot Workshop (5+) is about designing robots (using cardboard tiles rather than metal pieces, cogs and wheels) for space missions. The learning part is understanding what is required to carry out the tasks at hand. Artie has a built-in Wifi server so can be used anywhere without requiring an internet connection. The easy-to-use drag and drop programming can be used on a Mac, PC, tablet or smartphone and offers four modes of play; pre-programmed shapes, games, art for colouring and freeform coding. Kids learn basic programming skills via step coding and logic by getting the robot to manoeuvre and turn, avoid and move objects, plus make sounds. Designed and created by coder parents, Tacto Coding connects to your tablet, on which kids can interact using figurines on three different story-based games with over 200 challenges via the free app. imagiLabs is an all-female Swedish startup (springing from Google for Startups and Apple’s Entrepreneur Camp) aiming to bridge the gender divide in coding with imagiCharm, a small but smart device that can be visually customized by coding in a mobile app (iOS and Android).Artie works amazingly well once you get the hang of his interface. It’s fascinating to watch him, too. Syd has spent hours inputting random code into him, to see what happens. It’s a brilliant cause and effect type toy, and a great introduction to the idea of coding. No actual coding happens, though. All told, we love our Artie 3000 Drawing and Coding Robot, and I can see him getting lots of love over the Easter Holidays!

The best stem science kit for kids are educational products that stimulate discovery, building, and exploration. For kids age 7+ and older, this Educational Insights STEM toy is an ideal kids' first robot that introduces important coding skills in a hands-on manner and complements other popular science toys including chemistry sets, action circuitry building kits, and experiment stem products. Whether as a holiday or birthday gift for kids or part of a homeschool curriculum, DIY science, smart lab toys, building sets, and engineering experiments offer hours of educational learning and action. The limiting factor for each of the steps was the Artie Max robots ability to turn and to maintain itself in space. I was able to expand the size of the arrow, was able to create a narrower arrow, but I was not able to create a crisp corner like the image. Despite the limitations, I truly enjoyed the experience with my kids and with the STEM activity. It’s aimed at teenage girls, but is equally relevant for open-minded, creative boys interested in learning the basics principles of coding. Artie comes with 4 coloured pens, which are washable. (They washed off our coffee table easily, when Artie ran off the paper)! Image Credit You can program the RoboMaster S1 to recognize and follow humans, read signs and recognize gestures by following the various in-app tutorials, allowing you to get creative with your robot, but it’s not limited to pre-defined functionality.

The robot dog has Sound, Touch and Proximity sensors, speaker, wagging tail, LEDs, and programmable expressions. Assemble your robot and place the mechanical coding wheel into the heart of the robot to steer its coded courses and tasks.
