I’m glad he’s returning to the fold. “Look, I’m quite naive,” he says. “I never know when people don’t like me, and I never expect them not to. So I’ve always been surprised when I irritate people.” He never meant to stay away so long. But his three kids were growing up, he was living mainly in Fremantle, Australia, his wife Sophie's home town. He had his writing to occupy him: 16 novels now, not to mention three series of Shakespeare sitcom Upstart Crow (plus a stage version, opening in the West End early next year). Which partly explains why he is "as scared as I get" to return to standup. "Which is not proper scared," he clarifies. "When I started as a comedian, 38 years ago, standup was very, very rough. That was proper scary. If I hadn't had my cornflakes by 8am on the day I was compering at the Comedy Store, there was no way I was going to eat."

Identity Crisis by Ben Elton - Penguin Books Australia

The book is provocative in that ittalks about the way we are all becoming increasingly isolated, he says. "It's not blaming any group for that, in any sense. But the nature of internet debate, if we can call it such, does tend to lead to battle lines being drawn before anybody even realises what the opposing armies – if I can put that in large inverted commas – represent." Elton returned to live British television on Channel 4 on 21 October 2022 as "Ringmaster"/host of a revival of Friday Night Live, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of Channel 4 and as part of their Truth and Dare season. [29] Speaking to Adrian Chiles on BBC Radio 5 Live on broadcast day, Elton readily admitted that because of the fluid UK political situation, "I honestly haven't written the first five minutes yet!" You don’t have to be a Brit to find this a good read, but it helps because there are some side characters (with satirical names) who are stand-ins for political figures well-known in the UK.

A term used to describe the wide spectrum of human sexuality. The Rainbow has long been used by the gay movement, but is not exclusive to gay people. Identity Crisis saves its highest-calibre ammunition for right-wingers. Says one smooth scoundrel: "They'll welcome the queers, undermine marriage, sell out the nation state, betray the Church and give up fox-hunting just as long as they can hang on to the money. It's what makes the right wing so trustworthy."Elton has been criticised for writing a musical with Conservative Party supporter Andrew Lloyd Webber. In his defence, Elton said: "If I were to refuse to talk to Tories, I would narrow my social and professional scope considerably. If you judge all your relationships on a person's voting intentions, I think you miss out on the varieties of life." [64] Elton became a stand-up comedian primarily to showcase his own writing, but became one of Britain's biggest live comedy acts. [19] After a regular slot on Saturday Live – later moved and renamed Friday Night Live – which was seen as a UK version of the US's Saturday Night Live, he became the host of the programme.

I’ve never given such a low rating to a Ben Elton book but I would’ve given up on it if it wasn’t written by him. I was hoping it was going somewhere, but unfortunately not really. He has the distinction of being nominated twice for TV's Room 101, firstly by broadcaster Anne Robinson in 2001 [59] and also by comedian Stewart Lee who compared Elton, "as ranking lower ethically than Osama bin Laden". [60] Political views [ edit ] Phew. You can see why, in that context, the prospect of a few trolls quibbling with his take on 21st-century identity politics might seem small beer to Elton. I end up feeling sorry for the man – traduced way out of proportion to his supposed crimes, despite clearly being a conscientious and thoughtful entertainer, who (notwithstanding his denials) at least bothered to stand for something in the first place. Any of us could be misunderstood or misquoted or simply lied about at any point. I can't do anything about that. All I can do is write with the great care and diligence that I always do about the things that are affecting us all. I wrote a book about the environmental crisis 30 years ago." What it talks about, hopefully giving a fair representation of various identities which are certainly new to the mainstream, and some of which aren't, is the splenetic nature of public debate, some of which is real, but much of which, I suspect, is not."
