About this deal

However, it’s the technology that goes into making coffee that really sets it apart, including extra power for better extraction of flavours, and its Aroma Control feature that, when activated, ensures a consistent taste for less than six cups without bitterness. If you have space for it on your worktop and are an all-day coffee drinker, this is a fine choice. I wouldn’t recommend brewing coffee to sit for more than 2 hours in a carafe as the flavours will start to deteriorate.

The thermos jug comes with two lids, one is fitted when filtering the coffee which has holes around the outside so coffee can then be poured after the brew. They are currently amongst the front runners in the domestic coffee brewing scene and showcase some really high-quality prosumer products including the Sage Barista Pro Espresso machine and the Sage smart grinder Pro coffee grinder. The programmability is where the Sage precision drip coffee maker really justifies the price tag though. We like to focus on the pour-over method, which is a more manual style of brewing involving hand-pouring water through coffee and a paper filter. It allows for much better control over the amount of coffee and the overall result.

There are a number of preset functions that brew great coffee straight out of the box, Gold, Fast and Strong have pre-programmed variables. The capacity of filter coffee makers can range from 1-2 litres of brewed coffee. It depends on how much coffee you consume and how many people you are making coffee for at once. It’s a speedy brewer, too, as you’ll only have to wait a mere six minutes for a full, ten-cup jug of coffee. The hot water element turns off automatically once the 1.25L water tank is empty, while the hot plate remains on to keep coffee hot for 40 minutes. What’s most notable about the hot plate, though, is that it preserves the temperature at around 80 to 85°C and doesn’t impact the coffee as markedly as other hot-plates on alternative filter coffee machines. The Moccamaster stands out as a sleek and sensible choice for consistently great coffee without the hassle.

When narrowing down which filter coffee machines to consider you can first look at the type of coffee machine jug that will best suit your needs. Glass jugs are the traditional and most common type of jug, these give great visibility of the coffee in the pot but are prone to breaking if dropped or damaged. Stainless steel coffee jugs however will not break and have the added benefit of keeping your coffee warmer, although most filter coffee machines do also include a heating plate to keep coffee warm. At Melitta we also sell coffee filter machines with insulated jugs, these are ideal if you want to keep your coffee warm for a longer period of time. Timer Function There is also a timer so you can load up the basket with your finest ground coffee the night before and wake up to a jug of delicious filter coffee, perfect for early mornings. Water temperature is very important when you are brewing coffee in any brew method. If the water is too hot the coffee will be over extracted and bitter while too cold and the coffee will be under extracted and sour. You should use coffee that is ground to a medium coarse setting. If you are familiar with the feel of various coffee grounds it should be finer than a cafetiere setting and coarser than an Aeropress or Moka pot. Clean the cafetière before use – you need to clean it before or after every time you use it. Reusing a cafetière without cleaning will make your coffee taste a little old or muddy. There is a built in bloom (pre-infusion) setting that sets this machine apart from the rest. This enables the ground coffee to release unwanted trapped CO2 which results in a less bitter tasting coffee.

Measure out 60 grams of coffee for every litre of water. Obviously, if you’re only using 250ml of water, that’s 15g of coffee, and so on. If you don’t have scales then Hario brewers come with a scoop to give you an idea. The removable 1.25-litre water tank is a nice addition, so you don’t have to fill the carafe from the tap then decant into the machine, and the descaling light reminds you to banish limescale buildup on a regular basis. There’s also a strength adjuster, AromaSelector, on the top of the machine but we found it to be more effective when brewing smaller amounts of coffee – at its full capacity of 10 large cups (125ml) or 15 small cups (85ml) it made little difference to the flavour. Preference of coffee strength varies between our customers and their households, to ensure we meet all of your needs many of our filter coffee machines include adjustable coffee strength. You can easily switch between mild, medium, and strong, when you want a more or less intense coffee experience. Each coffee strength setting creates a clean, crisp, delicious tasting filter coffee moment. Integrated Grinder The origin and blend, of course, is yours to choose. In terms of grind – filter coffee is works best with a medium grind, although for a Fellow or a Hario, we recommend grinding a little finer than a Chemex.

Taste - There will be a difference in taste, moreso body of the coffee. A paper filter will stop many of the soluble oils entering the coffee as well as any fine grounds reusulting in a cleaner cup which is great for lighter roasts or more complex coffees. A permanent filter is usually stainless steel or plastic with tiny holes. The end result will be a more full bodied coffee which is great if you’re a fan of rich darker notes in your brew. They have many of the best filter coffee machines in the UK on the market today alongside a few manual pour-over cones. The downside is that while it’s made from durable BPA plastic, you will have to clean it by hand and not in the dishwasher. However, as a portable and uncomplicated route to great filter coffee it definitely deserves its name.
