I collect dive masks like some women collect purses. But, unlike swapping out a new bag for a new season, when I find a mask that fits well, and doesn’t flood or fog, it stays in pretty much permanent rotation. I’ve long been a fan of frameless masks, such as the Cressi Z1, my long-time go-to. So, when I received two new Cressi masks to review — one of which is also frameless — I was excited to try them. We’ll start with the A1. Unboxing the A1 Mask The pink frame and yellow lenses on this A1 mask make it eye catching above and below the water (photo by Chris Miskavitch) It’s a timeless design that suits most divers and while yes it does have a Scubapro S front and centre, the gorilla is slightly larger for a wider field of view compared to the standard version and if you’re like me then larger masks just suit you better. The best masks should form an airtight and watertight seal; effectively manage your air consumption with each dive; and not leave your face covered with marks, no matter how long you are under water. Comfort is one thing which will determine your overall enjoyment, so although it may take time finding the mask that fits you best, it really is worth it. Vision and Volume The mask has an internal channel that allows you to use either halogen or LED lights without having cords hanging in your face or getting tangled up in the strap system. Most scuba diving masks have a frame; a hard bit connecting the glass lens to the skirt (the soft bit which seals to your face).

The silicone skirt on this mask is flexible and conforms to your face comfortably without pinching or digging into your skin. We tested this mask on a few of our divers to various depths between 5-25m and no one reported a leak. Therefore, as it’s also leak proof, you don’t have to worry about water getting into your mask when you dive down deep or the subsequent mask clearing, which can be an uncomfortable experience for beginner scuba divers. Sure they’re not quite so durable but it doesn’t matter when they’re as cheap as the F1 and so far my own one has yet to show any signs of wear and tear. This frameless Cressi 1 mask has no frame, allowing it to have a reduced weight and volume, it can be used for all underwater sports. Cressi F1 Frameless Mask – Features This dive mask is made from tempered glass, which gives it extra strength and durability. One of our divers has been using this mask every day for the last few months and the lens still looks as good as new, despite it being lugged around in their kit bag to around 50 dives.Single or Dual Window - single window masks may give you a wider view and are more travel-friendly (fold into a flat shape), but they don’t always fit well on narrower faces, and may leak. They also hold larger air volume too, so they are harder to clear, and are not compatible with most corrective lenses.

This is the same style of mask as the Cressi F1, however it has a lower volume and a smaller fit for smaller faces/children. ColourOne thing to note when looking at prices, is that although it is related, the price doesn’t always reflect the quality. There are some great masks on the market, even for smaller faces, at very affordable prices. The frame of the Cressi F1 Mask is made from a durable plastic that can withstand harsh conditions. The skirt and strap are made from soft silicone, which makes them more flexible and comfortable than other materials. The skirt of the mask is also designed to retain your ears in position when swimming underwater. One thing I will say is that this is a slightly leaky mask if you have a beard (like me!) or a really big face with a lantern jaw.
