About this deal

We do appreciate the inclusion of Google Assistant via voice or the keyboard, but again, this isn’t unique compared with almost every other modern Chromebook. November 10, 2017 update: We incorrectly stated that the Pixelbook ships with a 15 W Core i5-7200U. This has been corrected to the 7 W Core i5-7Y57.) Although there are some other feature highlights, notably a 1080p webcam (that’s something not even Apple’s high-end MacBook Pro laptops have) there’s not a huge amount else to get terribly excited by on the features front.

Weirdly, the most eye-catching part of the Pixelbook Go is its crinkle-cut underside. Aside from adding a little extra bit of grip, though, and giving you a talking point on the walk between meetings, it doesn’t have much point. The rest of the design is unfussy yet appealing. Its gently curved corners and flat lid feel friendly and approachable and I particularly like the smooth matte finish, which Google calls “finely painted magnesium”; it feels lovely under the palm. The Pixelbook Go's audio quality is also excellent, especially given its light weight. The grilles for the stereo speakers flank the keyboard, instead of being located on the bottom of the laptop as is common on other ultraportables. This made for robust, clear sound even at the highest volume setting during my testing. Lenovo ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 (Intel) review – sturdy business notebook that offers good comfort under load Oct 26, 2023Powered by a 7th Gen Intel® Core TMi5-7Y57 or i7-7Y75 processor for faster browsing, gaming, and seamless 4K output to an external monitor. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.2 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 95% of all devices are better. The uncommon 3:2 12.3-inch display carries a native resolution of 2400 x 1600 pixels to be slightly less dense than the display of the Surface Pro tablet. Even so, images are still very sharp with contrast and brightness values comparable to the Microsoft tablet. The overlying glass layer is thin enough that colors appear vibrant and close to the surface. We can notice no graininess issues on the glossy display that can often occur on matte panels. There's no denying that the Pixelbook feels great to hold and use. The chassis itself sits with the best that Lenovo, HP, and Dell have to offer in the lightweight subnotebook convertible category while remaining firm and surprisingly unyielding. It would be quite the competitor in the mainstream Ultrabook space in the unlikely event that we see a Windows-based Pixelbook. In the near future, Chromebooks could borrow one of Windows' best multitasking features. Currently, Chrome OS users might feel a bit envious of Windows 11's robust split screen menu that allows vertical, horizontal, three-way, and four-way divisions. The battery is where you’ll see a huge difference here. The Pixelbook has a 41WHr battery that promises up to 10 hours. The Pixelbook Go has either a 47WHr (FHD) or 56WHr (4K) battery, both promising up to 12 hours. Just in Google’s claims alone, the Go has a two-hour lead.

This will be an incredibly useful tool for students, particularly, but users in general will benefit.

The Pixelbook Go's camera is far better than those of most other ultraportable laptops, owing to its 1080p resolution. (Most laptop webcams are limited to shooting video in 720p.) This means noticeably better videoconferencing quality—the picture was free of graininess during my testing in a brightly lit office, something that even far more expensive laptops can't accomplish. Parents buying their college-bound son or daughter a Pixelbook Go will appreciate this feature. The maximum temperature on the upper side is 38.8 °C / 102 F, compared to the average of 35.3 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 55.7 °C for the class Convertible. Despite this solid build quality, the Pixelbook Go is featherlight. It weighs 2.3 pounds and measures 0.5 by 8.1 by 12.2 inches (HWD), extremely competitive dimensions for an ultraportable with a 13.3-inch display. Compare them with those of the MacBook Air (0.6 by 8.4 by 12 inches, 2.75 pounds) and the Pixelbook (0.4 by 11.4 by 8.7 inches, 2.46 pounds). If there’s anything distinctive about this Chromebook in terms of features, we’d have to point again to its sharp, 1080p webcam. It’s a rarity on Chromebooks much less some of the most expensive laptops out there. Since our wider suite of benchmarking software doesn't work on Chrome OS, I evaluated the Pixelbook Go's performance on a casual basis during a few days of use. The system went through a firmware update when I first turned it on, taking just a few minutes as opposed to the hour or more that major Windows and macOS updates can last. Once updated, the Pixelbook Go proved exceptionally snappy at starting up (13 seconds from pressing the power button to the appearance of the login screen) and installing apps. But if money's no option, the Google Pixel is the best damn Chrome OS machine you'll find because it provides a level of usability, performance and style you won't find on any other Chromebook. We've also decided to run Android-based benchmark tools on the Pixelbook and have recorded the results below for the sake of curiosity. Note that these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt as the Play Store apps are not designed to run in a virtual Chrome OS environment or test Chrome OS performance. However, one huge flaw in the Pixelbook Pen is that it doesn’t attach to the laptop in any way, not even via magnets, like the Surface Pro. This oversight makes it that much easier to lose this stylus that cost you so much money. Plus, it runs on AAAA batteries, whereas a rechargeable solution would’ve been much more worthy of the price tag.
