I was no longer angry about what i could not and did not have in a relationship. In the meantime, I learned how to mind my own business. The business of loving myself and being excited about me. Either way the last third is much more coherent and funny but the first two thirds are reminiscent of others' work and I'd say both Burroughs and Hunter S Thompson did it better (or worse depending on your point of view). It's another of those books that I would also pop into one of my favourite genres - that being bonkers. It is, and then some. Characters who are completely larger than life, lots of weird and wonderful shenanigans. And more drugs than the whole Trainspotting series - and that's just chapter one - no not really, but almost! And that is the ONLY comparison to make with Welsh's series. Anything else is an insult to both... The interference from my relationship channel was creating static on every other channel of my life. Marina is dead, Felix is a suspect. But he also an addict - big time - and spends the majority of his life out of his head. So he could have done it, but he suspects not, he sort of has an alibi. He is our narrator and, as you can expect from a man of his "highs" the story is somewhat confusing in places. He also enlists several of his friends and associates to assist him in his endeavours to discover the real murderer as he believes that the Police don't really care.

What do his choices tell you in regard to what Portico cares about?WS Gilbert was said to have been inspired to write The Mikado by going to a Japanese exhibition in South Kensington. Which part of the definition do you think describes the community that is created by the residents of Skylight Gardens? Give examples of specific ways that they demonstrate that they care and look out for each other. Sondheim has yielded a fair amount of study in book form and we keenly await David Benedict’s biography. In the meantime, this excellent book offers 27 essays that combine academic and theatrical analysis. In the former category Dominic Symonds traces the connections between Oscar Hammerstein and Sondheim, showing how the palindromic structure of South Pacific – in which themes and songs are echoed and repeated – impacts on Into the Woods. Meanwhile Keith Warner, who directed Pacific Overtures for ENO, makes a passionate case for subsidised theatre embracing not just Sondheim but experimental works such as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Allegro. A book for buffs that takes Sondheim seriously. Zola's family gives Portico a refuge when his parents fight, and his parents clearly care for him while they try to work through their issues.

It jumps about and trails away, in ebbs and flows, which keep you engaged without having to pay too much attention. I enjoyed the entire story and liked the characters of Felix, Jane, Donnie, and Amy very much. I wish we'd had a bit more information about Amy earlier on, though reading to the end revealed an important plot point as to why this couldn't happen. Frankie Boyle’s first work of fiction is an enjoyably dark and entertaining tranche of Glasgow noir. It contains all the deft wordplay you’d expect and a few well-aimed, drive-by satirical shots at political targets along the way.Even now I'm finished I'm not entirely clear if Marina was murdered, who killed her or if Felix even unravelled it (it seemed much more likely to be the work of the ex-cop who seems ridiculously willing to help a man who can't keep his eyes open half the time. Never have I ever laughed this hard while reading a crime novel. With the novel’s protagonist Felix, Frankie has definitely injected him with much of his own sense of humor as well as his often fatalistic view of society. I don’t believe I’ve ever highlighted as many passages in one novel to send to friends than I have for this book. I’m very happy that my wife is also a fan of Boyle’s because I certainly said “Hey, can I read you this one part?” over and over again while reading next to her in bed. The mystery that underpins this crime novel is solid enough, but I can't help thinking that its role is secondary and it is essentially only a vehicle for the author to air his thoughts - both comedic and socio-political. In many respects "Meantime" does come across as one long Frankie Boyle stand-up routine. For that reason, I found that I had to break this down into digestible portions ... Listening to Frankie Boyle for an hour or so is fine, but a stand-up routine of six hours or more is probably a bit more than I could cope with in one hit. This award-winning HBO documentary, directed and co-produced by James Lapine, uses six classic Sondheim songs as a way of exploring his craft and examining his life. The analysis of the songs is fascinating. We learn how Something’s Coming from West Side Story was written in one heady day with Leonard Bernstein and used baseball metaphors to convey Tony’s propulsive energy. But the songs are spliced with interviews from various stages of Sondheim’s life. The verbal wit is there, as when he says “I osmosed myself into the Hammerstein household”. So too is the emotional pain as in his revelation that his mother, on the eve of open-heart surgery, sent him a note saying the only regret in her life was “giving you birth”.

Meantime is beautiful in its harsh and brutal narrative. The writing is crystal clear, each word soaks into your skin like the bleak Scottish rain. No happy endings but it is intricate, it settled under my skin and had me craving more. Every mistake carves a deep and unsettling wound. If one sentence could sum it up it would be that. And my final comment which I think is quite key to the whole thing. It's a bit tongue in cheek and doesn't take itself that seriously - which, for me, made it all the more enjoyable and easy to read. I wonder if he has another book in the pipeline. I'd definitely be up for more of the same... But it’s just weird, and trying to be a bit to cool? It’s VERY political, extremely satirical and I’m not sure if it’s all just Frankie Boyle writing a massive Parody of life today.What does a building superintendent do? Why do Zola and Portico conclude that the superintendent of Skylight Gardens is a superhero? In the meantime, if we can remain loving of ourselves and toward other people by staying in conscious and honest communication, a disruption, snag, or delay in a relationship becomes a healing process.When we cannot, we engage in meantime behavior - hurting, fighting, not telling the truth, and moving forward in confusion. Reading this book was the best thing I've done for myself in years. As a man reeling from ANOTHER extremely painful breakup, I was desperate for anything to sooth the pain. Having read LOTS of self-help books, I can say with some justification that this is the most spiritual, calming, healing guide to relationships that I've ever encountered. Like a cold compress on a fevered brow, I could always find relief and peace by reading this book, even at 3:00 in the morning.

I have upgraded my rating from four to five stars. Not because of the book itself, but because of how I feel about myself after having read the book, which I suppose is a comment on the book itself. I feel bigger, brighter, more centered, having found myself first, but then read the book like someone wandering a slightly overgrown path, discovering the truth in the words and trampling the grasses to make the truth more permanent, more prominent in my life. Meantime captures the banal and lively existence of being Glaswegian like a seesaw that drops you into oblivion. There are many downs, but it’s occasionally peppered with some good. It holds a different kind of magic, one where the disappointment from the referendum eats at the shoes of people walking to work, hailing taxis, and people on serious comedowns in dingy wee flats that contain all the hope of a mouldy pizza sitting on the countertop. Felix McAveety’s life has always been the sad rendition of unrealised potential. The death of his friend, Marina, is the fuse to allow himself to care about something again. LIVING THROUGH THE MEANTIME Learning to Break the Patterns of the Past and Begin the Healing Process I have a suspicion that there will be a strong correlation between people's attitude towards Frankie Boyle in general and their opinion of this book. The author can be something of a Marmite character and I suspect readers may react in a similar way to this novel.And so begins a bonkers romp, drug fuelled and, on occasion very very funny. Which takes our MC pretty much everywhere someone like me wouldn't dare go. Culminating in an ending that defied everything that came before. Brilliant! Why do you think Herbert Singletary was looking sad the first time Portico met him? Why do you think Herbert responded to Portico’s kindness by pushing him and calling him names when Portico was being nice to him?
