About this deal

I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly!

Similar to the protagonist in Millwood Hargrave and Freston’s first book, Julia and the Shark, Leila has a complex relationship with her mother. Both mothers are scientists absorbed in their work and both daughters struggle to connect to them. Leila is, however, frustrated as she feels she is not her mother’s priority, her work is. Yet ‘all the anger fades for a moment and there is only this: it feels so good to be held by her mother.’ The reader then witnesses a healing journey across the Arctic continent – healing for all involved – and the themes of not giving up hope and finding love become clear. It's a beautiful book, lovely illustrations, and with elements to the story that I hadn't realised were there, as they're not in the synopsis. Leila and her mother's situation and relationship is complicated and far from perfect, so as well as the story of Miso the fox and her travels across the Arctic, we have Leila's story coming to terms with what had happened to she and her family in the past, and with who her mother is and her mother's choices (as well as her own). Meanwhile, Leila embarks on a journey of her own – finding her way to the mother who left her. On a breathtaking journey across the sea, Leila rediscovers herself and the mother she thought she’d lost, with help from a determined little fox.Spelling Seeds have been designed to complement Writing Roots by providing weekly, contextualised sequences of sessions for the teaching of spelling that include open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts, linked (where relevant) to other areas of the curriculum and a suggestion of how to extend the investigation into home learning. Throughout this story, we are able to see the journey of a child getting to reconnect with her mother and the development in their relationship, as well getting taken on the journey of a young artic fox, forced to journey thousands of miles to ensure their survival. This is a four-session Spelling Seed for the book Leila and the Blue Fox by Kiran Millwood Hargrave. Below is the coverage from Appendix 1 of the National Curriculum 2014.

With strong links to the science, geography and PSHE curriculums, and featuring a confident female protagonist, children will relate to the highly relevant issues portrayed. This novel also has close connections with the first novel by this pairing, Julia and the Shark. Links and themes:This is an extraordinary book – wild and beautiful and perfect.
