About this deal

The art can appear repetitive as it primarily focuses on fungi (especially if you're not a fan of fungi) A big thank you to netgalley, for providing me this ARC of Mushroom Botanical Art by Toshimitsu Fukiharu in exchange for an honest review!

Fungi And Mushroom Drawings Of James Sowerby The Fungi And Mushroom Drawings Of James Sowerby

I just love botany books, the drawings are often so gorgeous and pretty bringing the plant to life in front of your eyes. So this one definitely had to come with me on my Netgalley shelf. James Sowerby was an Englishnaturalist, illustrator, and mineralogist. He studied art at the Royal Acadamy in London in the late 18th Century. This book was absolutely gorgeous and the illustrations looked absolutely gorgeous and provided amazing amounts of inspiration.

I did not feel this was particularly comprehensive. I felt like I wanted more contemporary works, or more variety in the works. I read somewhere that the book contains only open source images. I imagine this is true based on the ages of the sources. This would explain this issue. In the book there are collections of mushroom pictures by various naturalists. They include works from the 18th and 19th centuries and show very different mushrooms in various states. Some of the mushrooms are cut in half so you can see what they look like from the inside. Others are depicted as they grow in nature. A cozy read with nice artwork. There's many different styles of illustrations with an introduction to each illustrator. This is a wonderful vintage mushroom chart with over 69 individual mushroom illustrations by the fabulous French naturalist artist Adolphe Millot. This is the second collection of fungi and mushroom illustrations available. The other collection focused on mushroom charts and identification posters rather than individual mushroom drawings. The mushrooms in this drawing are probably one of the most recognizable edible mushrooms. They are move commonly known as the common morel. Plate 213 from “The Flowering Plants of Great Britain” by Anne Pratt, showing Scotch Pine, Juniper and Yew. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons)

Mushroom Botanical Art Print - Etsy UK

An absolutely beautiful and wonderful collection of fungi art, illustrations, drawings and pictures. It’s such a great compilation of many works from eminent experts and enthusiasts in the mycology field- mushrooms and fungi lovers would love this book! Mushroom Botanical Art contains botanical drawings of over 200 species of mushrooms and fungi by European and Japanese naturalists from the 18th to the 19th century. Toshimitsu Fukiharu, a curator at the Natural History Museum and Institute in Japan, presents these fantastic artworks, labeling every drawing with their scientific names, especially for this edition. Also included is a forward by Eugenia Bone, a well-known nature and food journalist. It's a fascinating book of history with beautiful illustrations. I would not recommend it as a field guide, but as an interesting book full of fungi, it's wonderful. This would make a nice selection for public library acquisition, for gardeners, gardening groups, smallholders, and lovers of botanical art. This is a true work of art & knowledge that looks like it belongs in an ancient library ( which is a totally amazing compliment coming from me) just as much as it belongs in EVERY library! So much fun to read & observe. I truly enjoyed this so very much. The beautiful colour plate paintings of each mushroom found inside will appeal to botanical art fans and mushroom lovers alike and the curated selection of images reveals the different painting styles between European and Japanese biological drawings of the period.

A curated collection of vintage fungi and mushroom drawings from the book “ C oloured Figures of English Fungi or Mushrooms” by James Sowerby (1809). Mushroom Botanical Art" consists of a large collection of vintage illustrations of mushrooms and relevant information. It would be a helpful source book for botanists, mycologists, and illustrators and artist.

Filled with intricate details, and often rendered in delicate hues of greens and blues, this book would be a great buy for anyone into mycology but also a more casual fan of fungi or those that Each chapter contains fascinating information on the artist and his drawing characteristics as well as history of genus names and other pertinent details. Amanita muscaria and Amanita caesarea, for example, are easily recognizable and observing different depictions is brilliant...though there are slight differences, the anatomy in each is correct and perfect. Did you know that the entire organism is actually known as the fungi and the mushroom is the fruit of the fungi? Therefore all mushrooms are fungi but not all fungi produce mushrooms. I do agree that this would be a great book for any artist who wants to try their hand at botanical drawings. The details in this one are just stunning and you can also see the way they did shadows and showed various bits of the mushrooms. Scientifically there is no difference between toadstools and mushrooms. However, generally, when people refer to toadstools they are talking about toxic, poisonous, or inedible fungi. Whilst mushrooms are used to describe tasty and edible fungi.
