I had been aware of Iceberg Slim, but had never read him. It was while watching Dave Chappelle's "The Bird Revelation," however, when I decided I NEEDED to read Iceberg Slim sooner rather than later. It was Chappelle who opened my eyes a bit to how understanding Slim's perspective on pimps and whores gave one a larger understanding of capitalism, power, and race in America.* So, I didn't need to enjoy this book to get something from it. I burst through this in an afternoon, and was surprised by how good the writing was. Samantha is moved from one foster home to the other in her early years. One day she meets an older girl called Amanda who introduces her to the exciting world of parties, alcohol and drugs - but it is not until it's too late that Samantha realises she is part of a deal Amanda has to exploit young girls to older men for sex. Completely under Amanda's spell, Sammy will do anything she says, but at what cost? in business you have to exploit every situation you can – if friendship prevent it, then you’re not on even footing with the competition, and you will lose“ Son, there is no reason except a stupid one for anybody to project on that screen anything that will worry him or dull that vital edge. After all, we are the absolute bosses of that whole theatre and show in our minds. We even write the script. So always write positive, dynamic scripts and show only the best movies for you on that screen whether you are pimp or priest.” It kills me that this child couldn't find attention in other avenues. I continue to preach that girls are mean because we are. We tend to be against each other rather than support each other. Maybe if Samantha felt like there was some place else to go, she wouldn't have felt the need to impress Ashley so much.

The prose is far too much of a pulp novel "hard-boiled" affectation to be truthful in any meaningful sense of that word. In fact, that style of prose and the particulars that are given would appear in many cases to have lead to a misinterpretation of this book as an instruction manual rather than a cautionary tale, and the author himself warned against that reading later in his career. (In a scene portrayed in the aforementioned documentary.) This book might be about pimpin’, but it’s also about deeper mindsets and about transcending pimping.A total of five other men were found guilty of multiple sex offences including rape, sexual assault against a child under 13 and conspiracy to arrange child prostitution and theft in relation to Spencer’s case.
